Re: New & Increased Fees in Mt. Hood National Forest
That aside, requiring a NW Forest Pass at new trailheads means the FS has to make capital investments to build new amenities and commit to an increased, unending outlay of services and maintenance for that site. With millions in deferred maintenance, and fees never intended to wholly sustain recrea...

Re: Seeking WA snowshoe recs
You'll find that you can only get to paradise on weekends. They are not plowing daily this year.snow_sketches wrote: ↑March 8th, 2023, 7:40 amThanks, these are helpful recommendations! Rainier/Paradise area is on the list, but somehow, I'd more or less overlooked the St. Helens area—so I'm excited to research those options.

Re: Seeking WA snowshoe recs
Two places with reliable snow AND reliable access are Mt Ranier NP and Mt St Helens. There are ample possibilities at the end of the road at Paradise. Mt St Helens has the Coldwater Lake area (might have to carry a bit), or the Marble Mtn area both of which invite wandering in a mostly treeless envi...

Ape Cave red tape?
Ape cave uses a timed entry permit system. Rec.gov for Ape Cave says tickets are checked at an entry booth, Ape Cave HQ, or the cave entrance. It has to be a costly expense for the forest service to administer the Ape Cave rules. I just assumed compliance was based on the honor system. Can anyone re...

Nesmith Point trail open and other gorge stuff (Oct 20, 2022)
Good News: It looks like the Nesmith Point trail is open now ( see here ). I passed by the trailhead on Oct 20, 2022 and any closed signs or blockages are no longer there. There is still a red "closed" tag on the mileage board for Nesmith Point. Bad News: Car break-ins are a problem. Yesterday I tou...

Re: Mt Adams: Glacial Lake above High Camp
Mission accomplished for me on Oct 10. I had a great and successful time in cool, partly cloudy weather. The key to relatively easy hiking to Glacier Lake lies in making the left turn past High Camp at the right place. After proceeding past High Camp, see a ridge to your left that is green (as oppos...

Re: Mt. McLoughlin 10-5-22
Nice work with the climb! I climbed it about 10 years ago. I remember the steepness was relentless - a real challenge. I also remember the overdone paint dots just about everywhere. Have the dots faded yet?
