Re: Mt. St. Helens climbing permit changes

How does same day deal help with the problem of no-shows when it is all done online? The presumption is the regretful buyer will release his permit to get a refund on his payment before his climb. Then the slot becomes for sale again. If the refund motivation is not working, that slot goes unused. ...

Re: Primrose Trail?

The only problem is all the flagging. Flagging ad nauseum. I'm a proud remover of forest trash, including and especially flagging. The nice thing about tape flagging is it's easy to remove because it's always tied at a convenient height and it's so light. Bring a box cutter to make quick work of re...

Re: Large Mudslide below Johnston Ridge - MSH

King county video confirms access to the lake and nearby trailheads is possible https://amp.theolympian.com/outdoors/article275508311.html Access to lake and nearby trails is NOT possible. But but but: I wonder if resourceful hiker could walk in to the Elk Bench trailhead (#211D) and hike the Lakes...

Re: White River Snowshoe and an Epic Avalanche 042523

You captured the rare aftermath of huge event. And you got great pics, including the starting zone near where I was "lunching" while waiting to start my ski run on the west edge of White River canyon that same day. Now it makes sense what I was seeing far below. I remember seeing a long ribbon of no...

Is the parking under the power lines near Shelly Lane closed? I mean, despite the signs? Has it been gated closed?

Re: New & Increased Fees in Mt. Hood National Forest

That aside, requiring a NW Forest Pass at new trailheads means the FS has to make capital investments to build new amenities and commit to an increased, unending outlay of services and maintenance for that site. With millions in deferred maintenance, and fees never intended to wholly sustain recrea...

Thanks, these are helpful recommendations! Rainier/Paradise area is on the list, but somehow, I'd more or less overlooked the St. Helens area—so I'm excited to research those options.
You'll find that you can only get to paradise on weekends. They are not plowing daily this year.

Re: Seeking WA snowshoe recs

Two places with reliable snow AND reliable access are Mt Ranier NP and Mt St Helens. There are ample possibilities at the end of the road at Paradise. Mt St Helens has the Coldwater Lake area (might have to carry a bit), or the Marble Mtn area both of which invite wandering in a mostly treeless envi...
