Re: Monte Cristo

The field guide seems to direct drivers to the lower trailhead (southern end) of the #53 Monte Cristo trail at the OH.org Monte Cristo Upper Trailhead page. The USFS directions directs drivers to the northern end of this N/S trail. I couldn't find an OH.org lower trailhead page but the OH.org upper ...

If you have (or can find online) the map excerpted below, see where it shows that road ending/connecting.
Here's your road on the CalTopoFS layer as presented by Hillmap. It roughly parallels trail 173 in red on your map.

Re: Strange experience at Frog Lake Day Use area

The problem with these concession operated sites is that they have the appearance of something other than legitimate even though they may be legit. For example, at Trillium Lake two summers ago, I was stopped at a road block requiring me to pay $5 to proceed. Forget that the road goes to places othe...

Re: Magic Trail?

My aging memory tells me I've seen that sign around Trapper Creek, perhaps near that jumble of bohemian houses near Government Mineral Springs. Supposedly, the Mazamas have a history of maintaining unofficial trails in the area (Rim, Sunshine, etc) as described here.

Re: Gooseneck Loop

I did this loop in Dec 2019 on a very heavy fog/big frost day. There were no trail flags at that time but there was a trail for most of the loop. I visited 1443 (a big flat high point) and I can't understand why anyone would want to do otherwise. Then I followed the fence to its' end at the start of...

Re: Snow Info requested Re:Snowshoe in Bend Area this Weekend

Weeks old snow reports should be good enough. Bring what you think you could need and then leave behind what you won't need when you arrive at the trailhead. It should be obvious when you arrive. The need for foot traction and floatation is highly variable this time of year and what's good one day (...

Re: What is this tower?

Thanks for the confirmation. Google confirms it's a SNOTEL precipitation gauge. More googling took me to the most excellent DIY Santiam Pass Ski Patrol weather site . It speculates about the hanging weather vanes: "To reduce wind effects, a "calming device" of hanging vanes surrounds the collection ...

Cloud Cap Inn tower
I saw this near the Cloud Cap Inn along the road between the inn and the Tilly Jane guard station. What is it? And what is the function of those hanging panels that ring the top?

Whatever you buy, make sure you get one with an engine snorkel. Everybody needs one. :D

Re: Mt. Hood low elevation snow bridge collapse rescue

I've hiked that route a handful of times this year for some convenient side-country skiing. I've punched through a couple of times near the climbers' cat track, but nothing like your ordeal. I think the cavity that caught you was a product of wind and huge snowdrifts over gullies (Hood has a lot of ...
