Re: History of some of the Mt. Hood Trails

I'm glad I just found out about this group! My dad created some of the trails around Mt. Hood in the 1920's and 1930's. He did it with some boys from local high schools. I wrote down his trail building history in the book "Fire Lookouts & Mountain Climbing in Oregon". I'm sure this info would be us...

Re: the curiosities of upper Salmon River

So much for "leave no trace"

Kind of reminds me of: Do as I say, not as I do... When it comes to gov't related "programs"

I could do pages on this topic. :D

Re: volcano monitoring equipment coming to wilderness slopes of Mt Hood

Yesterday in Paradise Park I spotted a pin pounded into a crack. Wondered what was up. Scouted around a bit and found a benchmark. Looks like 1983 was a busy year. Makes me wonder what was actually gained from putting these markers in? Any links to research? Cannot imagine they've moved much in the...

Re: Mt. Hood Mooney Tarn 09-21-2019

This was my route (full map here ): Mooney Tarn.jpg The ridge we went down (between the west and middle branches of Compass Creek) wasn't fun, but it wasn't especially dangerous. This is probably going to be the preferable route next time as I was looking down at the tarn from that ridge just over ...

Re: Mt. Hood Mooney Tarn 09-21-2019

Nice pictures Chris! It was nice to meet you up at the tarn last Saturday. I am pretty sure you were more surprised than we were when you arrived. It was not my first trip up there, a few friends have been begging me to take them so that was our day. I am glad were were heading out so you could enj...

Re: Mt. Hood Barret Spur (again!) 08-31-2019

Lovely report. One of my favorite places on the mountain. Just curious, what trail did you approach by? I used to approach from the Elk Cove trailhead (less forest road driving than Vista) but the blowdown in 2016 was so intense that I haven't been back via that approach. If you took Elk Cove or Pi...

Re: Mt. Hood Mooney Tarn 09-21-2019

The one time I was up there, I went up the west moraine of Eliot Glacier and came at the tarn from above. The bushwhack down to the Timberline Trail was annoying, but at least we only had to do it once! Yep, yep. My first time to Mooney, I was amazed at how easy it was to find. From above, it's com...
