Re: Eureka Wagon Road/Cemetery Ridge Loop: 5/28/21

You did this hike two days before I did! You went a lot farther than we did; we only made it down to Eureka Viewpoint before it started getting too hot for comfort. It would have been funny to run into you. I think you or Bobcat were the only people from here I would have expected to see so far from...

Re: What/where is "School Canyon"?

Looking at this map from the historic overlay on CalTopo, it seems like there was a school down canyon of Ball Point. I'm guessing that's where the name comes from.

Like ships passing in the night! I did much of this hike the week before and we hit huge snowdrifts near Squirrel Prairie. All of that heat the week after must have zapped all of the snow away.

And yes, Summit Ridge north of Squirrel Prairie has some excellent views!

Re: Trailheads requiring 4x4 / high clearance vehicles?

One thing about bad roads is that they tend to attract a lot of people who are into the challenge of driving them. The worst roads I've been on near Portland all led to places that were more crowded than you would expect. Many of them were listed above, but I'll also add Elk Lake near Detroit. The r...

Badger Creek has quite a few less-traveled trails because its a long drive and not that exciting of a place to visit. It's not ugly, just doesn't warrant the 12-hour day.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Of the non-alpine wilderness areas near Portland, the Badger is by far my favorite.

There are at least 3-4 sites at Big Slide Lake but probably more. If you explore around the lake you'll probably find something to your liking.

Re: The other eagle creek road closed

That's great news! This is one of my favorite hikes and I wish the local Forest Service would do their utmost to really bring it into the hiking network. It's a fantastic place to escape to, and I'm glad it's reopened.

Thanks John! I'm looking forward to getting this out into the world. I think a lot of people are going to like this.

There will be more talks in the near future if folks can't make this one.

I've been a member here since the forum opened in 2006. Like many longtime members I don't really post much anymore - such is the evolution of forum culture, and this place is no exception. But I'm grateful that there are still so many folks active here. One of the reasons I stopped posting as much ...
