Butte Camp Dome, Mt St Helens

This was to be my second ascent of this bump on the SW side of Mt St Helens. I did it a few years back with Don Nelson (aka: elk man) and Peder Bisberg. That trip was a crazy one, going up a flood gully, and coming down through dense slide alder. This trip was very peaceful, with no big surprises. I...

Re: BADGER-KIRK-SHARK, GEMS OF THE BOUNDARY 8/27/2019

Nice report! You covered a lot of ground on this trip. I know the area well! While the trail bikes do chew up the trails, the riders have always been courteous to me, often stopping and talking story for a few minutes. Also, if it wasn't for the spring clean-up rides that the clubs organize, most of...

The elk in that area are particularly good at making trails (because there are so darned many of the critters!)
Here is a picture of one just a couple of miles away.

Re: Black Mountain - attempt and final success: 101718 and 080319

Boy, now you know that I just have to do this! Congratulations to the 3 of you. Probably a good thing I wasn't part of this expedition, who knows when we would have finally made it back to the cars, & I hate hiking those first / last miles in the dark. For some reason, that section of forest gives m...

Re: Siouxon Peak Loop

Dangerous spots like that slide seem to be so subjective..... I did it last year, and wasn't bothered by it much. However, if there were kids along, I am not sure I would do it without a safety rope. On the other hand, the rock chute on the #211 trail up from Coldwater Lake up to Snow Lake, seems to...

Re: July 16-18 Mt Margaret Backcountry via Norway Pass

Quince, We just got back from 5 days at Snow Lake, will get a TR together soon. We had a totally different take on the 4th rock slide chute. We are both old rock climbers, so are usually not deterred by some exposure. We both found that first couple of steps into the chute unnerving, to say the leas...

Interesting that you saw all the goats. We have seen them in the area, but had not seen them on Craggy itself. Also, had only seen single animals. Other parts of the Dark Divide, we have seen big families.

Did you make it to the "real" top of Craggy Peak (the second block)?

Mt Margaret BC, Snow Lake permit

I snagged four spots for Snow Lake, entering on July 21, exiting on July 26. 2 of our planned party had to back out.
If you are interested in 1 or 2 slots, PM me. No charge, (I think it's illegal to charge anyway), I just hate to see the slots go unused.

Re: Mt Margaret Loop & Snow Report

Agreed, that if one is already planning on doing the Mt Whittier loop, then this little slide is of minimal concern! Perhaps just usage has smoothed these slide sections out some. I hope so, we are spending 5 days at Snow Lake, to do local climbing (Minnie Peak and others to the NW), so will be trav...
