Re: Larch Mountain 2024/3/20
We covered a lot of trail last weekend. It's been warm since then so I'm guessing there's been a lot of melt, although the North Fork Snotel (behind Nesmith) is still showing 51"

Re: Horsetail Ridge
It's definitely been hiked since the fire, it got covered a few years ago during a search up ROA. Have been trying to get the Nesika Lodge to Franklin ridge connection made for a couple years and it's a continuous slog to keep fighting the underbrush and new fallen trees. :-( FYI I'm not sure how pe...

Re: Rock Wall at Oneonta and Gorge 400
I believe one of the top theories is that it's likely part of the foundation for one of the original wagon roads. Probably built by inmates and backfilled with dirt that's since washing out. That would have been pre highway and railroad.

Re: SAR and geolocation
The most important thing, is we need a place to start... It's frustrating, and painful to have family call in that X person went hiking and they haven't come back, and have NO idea where they are other than some vague area like "In the gorge, or maybe on Mt Hood?" Is there a system or procedure to ...

Re: SAR and geolocation
Recently, I read an article discussing a proprietary geolocation system called what3words. https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/03/28/3-words-that-could-save-a-lost-hikers-life Basically, the system is based on the idea that it is easier for most people to say and remember a few words rather than a st...

Re: Visit to Foxglovia 1-24-22
I don't have a problem with people coming up with their own internal names for places, but I really wish they'd stop posting signs with random trail names on them. I'm sure it's fun and cute to some niche of people but this can legitimately and seriously confuse people, and misdirect resources when ...

Re: Best way to clean up GPS tracks?
Some smartphones use the cell network as well as GPS to determine your position. Putting the phone into Airplane Mode while recording forces the phone to use only GPS so that intermittent cell phone reception doesn't throw your position off. 'Assisted GPS' is what you're thinking of, one of it's ma...

Re: Interesting tree markings
I would lean towards the woodpecker too, and after looking at other images of their tree damage it doesn't seem that they have issues working that close to the ground.
Given the chunky nature I don't think it's the case here, but deer tree rubs can be vaguely similar

Re: Lost hiker on Rock of Ages Trail
He was found safe. I wonder if he gets a fine for hiking in a closed area. I've heard conflicting info on whether the "Rock of the Ages Ridge" trail is closed. I can assure you, RoA is most definitely closed, and largely non-existent. We've had to call safety on that trail multiple times and pull t...
