Re: Covid-19

I wonder if hikers who paid for Mt St Helens permits will get a refund if the ban extends into April. I have a permit for April 17th. Crossing fingers that they open up before then. EDIT: Found this on the GPNF site: ALERT: Due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, all Mount St. Helens Climb...

Re: Covid-19

The thing is that when a few are irresponsible, everybody pays. They said on TV last night that you should enjoy the view at Dog Mtn in your car driving by rather than hiking up it. Clearly that person doesn't understand how the flower display there works, but it's still two months away anyway. If ...

Re: Mt. Defiance 07-12-2015

I've hiked Mount Defiance over 50 times. Actually I lost count a couple years ago. I almost always go up Starvation and then down Defiance trail except in winter, where I go up and down Defiance trail (less trail finding). It's a marvelous hike, I use it as a trainer for the other mountains around h...

Hitting up Angel's Rest before work...how early?

So, I think I saw the signage at Angel's Rest trailhead stating that it is open at 7:00 AM. Is this strictly enforced? Would love to bounce up this trail at 5:00 AM and then arrive at the office by 8:00. Has anyone done it earlier than the stated official times?

Thanks!

Re: Mt St Helens 21-Apr-2013

Nice pictures VanMarmot! I didn't realize you were into mountaineering. ;) I nearly asked about traction devices but then I went back and re-read the narrative. I've heard that the last two miles are the most difficult because the elevation gain is much greater - is that correct? Hi Crusak - I know...

Re: Mt St Helens 21-Apr-2013

A friend of a friend was visiting and wanted to climb a NW peak, so we decided on a dayhike of Mt. St Helens via Swift Creek. The weather forecast had been fluctuating wildly in the days leading up to the climb but we ended-up leaving the TH under gray but dry skies. Thanks for the TR and great pho...

I agree, I think maybe half the climbs I've done on this mountain were view-less (7 or 8). Still, it is a good workout and prepares you for other climbs out here, so that's how I approach it.
