Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)

A coworker is 30 miles from the Irma "track".
She's wondering if she will have home two days from now.
Sorry that all of you will miss those Gorge views.

Re: How to pay fee at Johnston Ridge Observatory BEFORE 10am

Johnston Ridge is a fee "area". The NWFP and the Interagency Passes do provide some advantages. But since it is a fee "area", you are required to provide a pass or pay a fee. I asked a similar question as the OP at the "Help Desk" at Johnston Ridge. The response was to pay the fee at the visitors ce...

Re: What in the hay now?

Not sure I follow you. That pic was taken at the bottom of Devil's Backbone, where the "trail" used to be. Now a slightly tricky scramble is required to get around it. The other picture of the user chutes was also taken from the trail near the top of Ponytail Falls. Maybe there was some conf...

Re: What in the hay now?

Once free, trying to put the genie back in the bottle only amplifies interest by some of the ones you'd most like to stay away. I agree. There are a lot of hikes that I didn't know about until the last few months. But all of the complaining (on this site) about how they shouldn't be talked about ha...

Re: What in the hay now?

I don't feel like the internet is crawling with people who are looking for a hint of new destinations hidden in the gorge... I suspect you're wrong about this. Again, see the #munrapoint hashtag. The internet is definitely contributing to the popularity of these previously little used areas. Frankl...

There will not be any reservations for back country camps. Everything will be first come, first served.

Re: Backpack Trail Suggestions w/ 12 year old?

I wanted to throw this out there for the parents of young children. I have often come across parents that have seen my kids hiking/backpacking that have said... I should take my kids hiking/backpacking. YES! Yes you should. My kids started day hiking at 5 & 6. They started backpacking at at 7 & 8. M...

Re: Backpack Trail Suggestions w/ 12 year old?

I took my boys to the Goat Rocks from the Snowgrass trail head for a few nights when they were 8 and 9. We found a spot to set up a base camp and day hiked from there. I found that a base camp about 5 miles from the trail head with day hikes was a good way for my kids to start out. They didn't spend...
