Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

At the end of day, it's all about being comfortable in your own skin. Often times we are offended by things that we ourselves dwell on and maybe it's our own thoughts that we carry about ourselves. Enjoy the hike, and if you feel your are in a minority consider hiking with those who are similar to ...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

There are lots of ways it can be taken. I'll answer your question and turn it back on you. Why say it? Do you say it to everyone even the white cis het uber male hikers? Thanks Amy, well I definitely don't say it to everyone it's one of many casual greetings / comments I may or may not make to peop...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

While nearing the top of Dog Mt. last week, a guy said to me "you're almost there". I hear this from time to time but I sure don't understand how this could in any way be considered offensive. I never tell anyone this as such comments seem to me to be unnecessary but if some folks want to say it, w...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

Overheard on Mt St Helens this morning: Thin, tall white man: "So, is this your first time to climb Mt St Helens?" Older woman: "Well, this will be my 31st time." My partner and I got a huge laugh about this, partly because we just had a long, enlightening conversation about this thread. I'm sure t...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

"just say "people" instead" yeah although that's easy for us entitled white males to say. There are groups of people that have been disrespected in the past. Maybe we have to acknowledge that in order to move on. Maybe you need truth before you can move on to reconciliation This. Yes. Thank you! Ka...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

I think diversity in a bunch of categories that are irrelevant in the hiking community is a backwards goal. A much better goal would be perfect homogeneity in the hiking community in the only thing that matters - everyone wants to hike hikes (tempered with the goal of avoiding overcrowding). It may...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

I'm a white, cis, male, I'd like to offer advice to the other white, cis, males who are feeling anxiety or confusion over this conversation. First, please try to recognize that by being a cis, white, male, you carry an enormous amount of power, yes, privilege, in all of your social encounters. Priv...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

It's interesting that I understand things so clearly. I'm baffled at that. I don't know exactly what that means or where it came from. It strikes me as extremely sarcastic and/or condescending. Sorry if I misunderstood or if I'm being too sensitive, but that's how it came across to me. For the reco...

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

Hey 5th. You sound like a pretty decent person. This discussion has been interesting. I strongly disagree with some of the posts above, but that's okay. If I were to pick apart all the posts above that I don't like, I would probably enlighten no more than half of the posters. Kidding, of course. It...
