Yesterday was my 90th birthday. I got a balloon. I will not leave it in the woods. It is holding me upright.

Re: Historic Mount Jefferson (plus bonus!)
I think that the Mt Hood summit lookout lasted longer than has been suggested. According to Jack Grauer's history of Mt Hood the summit lookout was manned for several years during the 1930's. When I climbed Mt. Hood around 1951, there were remnants of the lookout on the summit.

Mt Bachelor is running their web cams. It looks to me like there has been a lot of recent melting.

Re: North Cascades vs Eagle Cap
There is a town on the way to Mt. Baker Ski Area called Glacier. I found a website--ShoulderSeason.net--about a family that rented a house in Glacier and took a week of day hikes. The site has beautiful pictures and many of the hikes involve less than eight miles and 2,000 vertical feet. Worth a look.

Re: North Cascades vs Eagle Cap
I recommend that you buy a book. The Mountaineers have published a number of North Cascades hiking books over the years. You might take a look at Park Butte on the south side of Mt. Baker. There was a lookout on top of the butte when I was there many years ago. Also a nice reflection pond just below...

Recreation.gov.
The Walls Street Journal reports that the operator of Recreation.gov is realizing more than anticipated income from its contract with the government. A law suit has been filed in Virginia by seven individuals seeking class action status. It is not clear to me what relief is being sought.

For a March day hike you should check out Silver Falls State Park--not a bad drive, lots of nice waterfalls and well-maintained trails.

Re: Recommended Mt Hood day hike in March
If you don't mind driving about 2 1/2 hours each way you could go to Smith Rock for hiking. No problem with snow and a nice drive over Mt. Hood. You can look it up on the internet--It is mostly known for rock climbing but has some very nice trails of varying difficulty On the other hand you could do...

Re: Cool Skyline Trail Story From OPB
I have a 1961 Forest Service map of the Oregon Skyline Trail. I don't know about the south half but I believe that very little of the north half was abandoned. Much of the trail was just renamed Pacific Crest Trail. Where the PCT was relocated, many of the former sections of the Skyline Trail were k...

Re: Brush and logs cleared from South Burnt Lake Trail
Agree. A fine view of Mt. Hood.
About 20 years ago on my last backpacking trip we spent two night on top of Horseshoe Ridge just off the Zigzag Mountain trail. I took these pictures with my brand new Olympus point and shoot digital camera.
