Re: Butte Camp Dome Loop Hike

Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to attempt the Loowit this weekend, but will go clockwise so that if snow is an issue (especially coming off Crescent Ridge to the Toutle) I can easily revise the plan. Hoping the big washout gully south of Sheep Canyon will be passable by a short person going ...

Have you been to Russian Wilderness? Route question

Hi folks, I'm considering a trip to the Russian this weekend - first time there. I'm contemplating the following route, most of which is off trail, and I'm wondering if anyway can confirm or deny its feasibility. Start at Etna Summit trailhead > Ruffy Lakes > top of Etna Peak > camp in vicinity of p...

Re: Butte Camp Dome Loop Hike

Thanks for this report. I'm considering doing the Loowit Trail this weekend and have been wondering what snow conditions are like on the SW side of the mountain. From your report I'm wondering if maybe this isn't a good weekend for it if there's still a lot of snow on the Loowit between Butte Camp a...

Longer winter hikes near Bend?

Hi friends, I'm thinking about heading east this weekend and am looking for hikes in the 10+miles range that might be accessible this time of year (knowing it's still pretty dry out there). I was looking at the Crooked River Ranch area (Otter Bench), but what I'm finding isn't quite as long as I was...

Re: Mt Tomroy

About how much snow did you encounter? I'm supposed to do a 2-nighter up there this weekend, to include the Whittier Ridge loop, but may reconsider given how snowy some of your pics looked.

Suggestions for taking 69-year old mom on first backpack

Hi folks, This summer I'm hoping to take my mother out for an early 70th birthday adventure - her first backpacking trip! I'm starting to brainstorm options for where I could take her, and thought I'd see if anyone out there has other good suggestions. Here are the parameters: -No more than about 4 ...

Re: Anyone completed Mt. Adams Round-the-Mountain xc section

Thanks for the beta everyone. The plan had been to go in on Saturday, the one day this year the reservation was open. Unfortunately, on Friday morning the forecast was looking pretty iffy for Saturday - cold and wet - so we decided to head to southern Oregon for a somewhat improved forecast. Round-t...

Anyone completed Mt. Adams Round-the-Mountain xc section?

Hi folks, I'm doing some research on completing the full Round-the-Mountain trail, including the trail-less section on the east side, in the coming weeks. For the cross-country section, I've seen references to a high route and low route. From what little I've been able to find on the high route, it ...
