Have taken mine into some sketchy places. Slow and Easy is the rule. And be prepared with alternate destinations and maybe adding the last mile of double-track to the hike.

Re: Best gear for hiking in pouring rain and cold?

Just learn to love being wet and cold. It feels so good to strip off all the soggy layers and stand by the fire!

Hunt for real Polar Fleece (Malden Mills), use a pack with coated fabric. Everything, as in EVERYTHING (cameras, key fobs, phones)
must be able to take a soaking.

If it makes you feel better, pack heat. ***ONLY if you know how/when to use it!!!***

As far as safety, you are more likely to be attacked in the supermarket parking lot when buying supplies.

Re: Seeking Poison Oak Relief

Only had it once in 68 years of wallowing thru the stuff without paying any attention, I have even built fireline thru burning thickets with a chain saw. However, my wife is VERY sensitive, she can get it thru the car window driving by. So I always strip in the garage and immediately launder my clot...

Re: What's your favorite national forest?

Willamette NF has turned most of its official campgrounds into RV cities which are not tent friendly. However there are some great dispersed opportunities. Anywhere along the Cascade spine between Crater Lake and Mt. Jeff has excellent hiking. But my personal fav is the Wallowa-Whitman, Umatilla, Ma...

Re: Gonna do the Wild Rogue Loop

Practice bear safe food storage. Rogue River is notorious for micro-cooties, use a safe drinking water protocol.
