6/26/19 - Lake Legore, Wallowa Mountains
Went up Lake Legore in the Wallowa Mountains this weekend. It takes off from the Hurricane Creek trail, and ascends about 4000 ft. in 4 miles to the highest true lake in Oregon (at least that is what I have read). 3 miles of steady snow free ascent followed by a chute that is either a rock garden or...

Re: Great Basin National Park
There is a snotel on Wheeler Mtn that you can look up each year to see how melting is going. Rangers told me the typical time at which the high country is open is early June and that's about when that snotel zeroed out this year. But since I still ran into a couple really minimal patches of snow, I...

Re: Great Basin National Park
Nice shots. Took my kids down there many moons ago (2005). There was a lot more snow then. I expected to see the same since it has been such a big snow year in the Sierra, but looks like it is really cleared out. I believe it was a record year that year though. They had a ton of water coming into th...

Re: West Fork Lostine River - 6/20/17
Thanks for the feedback! I'd be interested to hear how your buddy's trip on the south side goes. We were planning going up 1910 from East Eagle in the south in the coming weeks. Guess we're rolling the dice about getting up Horton Pass or any others. Might be a game time decision whether to take on...

Re: West Fork Lostine River - 6/20/17
Constant 5 feet snow 4 miles in? Did you see any of the passes? Are they feasible for the determined with crampons/snowshoes/axe? I think there is plenty of terrain to hit. My boss went up Mule Peak with snow shoes to 8700ft a couple weekends ago. You can see from my photos, that some of the expose...

Re: West Fork Lostine River - 6/20/17
I would have thought you would be able to walk a ways up canyon before hitting full snow, but it looks like you were probably on 100% coverage within less than a mile? It was not quite black and white like that. Most of it was in the trees in the river bottom, and where there was tree cover, I woul...
