take Lolo Pass road as far as you can. They plow it sometimes.

I've panned for gold with similar results, a few flakes. I got a book of places to find gold in Oregon and found a few places to go with nice camping. I remember going to Sweden Mine and Lang Mine in 1970. Mining relics. I don't remember the mines though.
