Re: Eastern Gorge Area Alive & Well

Maybe it doesn't rain so much there, but it sure can get windy. Good place to test wind worthiness of tents.

Re: Eastern Gorge Area Alive & Well

I'm embarrassed to post so much, I should really get a life :)

I really like the Deschutes River also. Escape from the miserable rain in Portland

Re: Three Sisters Loop September 6-10, 2021

I don't mind the burned areas They have better views when those annoying trees are gone :) It's natural. I like to follow the area in the following years and see how it grows back. You see smaller plants first, then tree seedlings,... Usually, the burn isn't widespread, there are patches that are un...

Re: How do I select an area to camp in without a campground?

chip has bad influence on me there was a thread about this quite a while ago if you go inside the Bull Run restricted area, and the authorities apprehend you, if you tell them you know it's restricted they'll probably fine you or whatever if you claim ignorance and said you didn't know it was restri...

Re: How do I select an area to camp in without a campground?

animals not usually a problem. bears around here just run away. there was that lady killed by a mountain lion a few years ago but that's rare mosquitoes and biting flies can be quite annoying. Ticks maybe even worse. Sun can be a problem, more likely after years of exposure getting lost, falling off...

Re: How do I select an area to camp in without a campground?

You said you wanted to park on side of road and hike a short ways to a camp It's legal to do that most anywhere in National Forest as long as it's not marked otherwise The road to Ramona Falls has a bunch of good spots. Close to Portland. Some traffic on that road though. The Road to Badger Creek an...

Re: Timberline Trail around Mt Hood conditions?

Yeah, nice hike up from Paradise to a high point. One use trail is a continuation of the Paradise Park Trail. Another use trail goes by split rock. You could make a loop - up one, down the other, but getting between them at the top is tricky. You have to do a steep slope with loose rock. The rains a...

type 2 fun?

I've done some canoe camping trips before. On lakes. Yeah, waves can be a problem. I bet a kayak would be better.

Re: Timberline Trail around Mt Hood conditions?

That's probably a better plan

That crossing of the Sandy is where someone died in September after heavy rain, so be careful. After the weekend the weather should be better.

Re: Goat Rocks

I have a 4 liter Platypus bag. 8 pounds when full of water. A good amount for one day. I'll carry that a mile or two if needed. Another strategy is to carry maybe 1.5 liters of water. That's enough for the evening. Then, in the morning, get up and walk to a water source where I'll have breakfast.
