Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, Your map shows the descent from Hunters Camp down to Camp Creek. If you are at Hunters Camp, you can step across the Pioneer Bridle Trail and begin the descent down the wide gully to the SW. This is Stephen Dow Beckham's "third, steep descent". This is from Stephen Dow Beckham's "Barlow Ro...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Thanks, Webfoot. I see that it's at the bottom of the Reply window, not at the top where the Insert URL button is.

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, It's best if you hike the wagon ruts yourself and see if what I'm saying makes sense. Here's a GPX for your Smartphone mapping program to help you find the ruts: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZ4z1oVZ6NBi6jstpvYk5PxVhjOTG7yhzE5V I've added the locations of the 1993 sesquicentenni...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, The map titled "Mt. Hood Loop Highway - 1924 USGS Topographic Map" in my Laurel Hill Google Photo album shows the Loop Highway. This is the road you walk on if you park by the Heritage Marker along US 26 (the current "modern" freeway) and walk up the stone steps to the "Laurel Hill Chute" ...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, Your first photo does indeed look like where the wagon road up the west end of Laurel Hill meets the present-day Pioneer Bridle Trail. Keep in mind that the Pioneer Bridle Trail originally came up (and down) this road. When the current freeway was built in the 1950s, the Pioneer Bridle Tra...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, I think a lot of your questions will be answered by the maps and photos in my Google Photo Album (link in my previous email). Jim Tompkins' Chute 3 near the Heritage Marker on Highway 26 ("Laurel Hill Chute Loop Hike" in the OregonHikers Field Guide) is Dr. Beckham's Chute 2. Refer to the ...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Perhaps some of my photos and maps will help: https://photos.app.goo.gl/R9PB3jF2QNTVgHQG9 I have found no evidence of stagecoaches going up Laurel Hill. Stage companies always advertised in local newspapers, and I've found no advertisements for stages over Laurel Hill. There are advertisements for "...

Re: Laurel Hill & the Barlow Rd

Dayhiker, There are other more reliable sources for information about the Barlow Road on Laurel Hill than Jim Tompkins' publications. Jim's information is mostly speculation - he did not walk the "chutes" he proposed. I took a class from him in Oregon City at the Museum of the Oregon Territory in 20...

Re: Best way to clean up GPS tracks?

CalTopo lets you configure the tracking interval via Settings > GPS/Location > Record Track Detail, giving you Low, Medium, High, and Highest.

CalTopo also has the ability to modify an existing track via the Modify feature, giving you Extend, Split, Reverse, Resample, Join, and Create Points options.
