Re: Demise of PortlandHikers

Strange that I stopped by here for the first time in almost a year, and I find a thread with the forum up in arms. I don't usually shit where I eat, but I don't eat here anymore because of two reasons: #1 - There are really only a small handful of users on this site and a ton of lurkers. The lurkers...

Re: Tahoe/Northern Sierra recommendations? (summer)

I stayed in South Lake Tahoe for a few days last summer. I was there for some concerts, but wanted to get a hike in with my brother. He has a bad back, and we didn't want to over-exert before a show, so we went to Lake Margaret, south of Lake Tahoe. Only a few miles RT, and flat, but a gorgeous hike...

Re: Don and Jeff find a grow site 2-27-2014

Guy, our views are not irreconcilable. I don't believe that legalization/decriminalization will significantly change the number of people who use marijuana. But it will remove the shame factor and make it easier to obtain for those who use it as a medicine. It will prevent productive, contributing m...

Re: Don and Jeff find a grow site 2-27-2014

No one ever looks at what the impact of legalization would have on our schools. It would be absolutely devastating. What? Legalization is quite different from decriminalization, and minors aren't allowed to purchase or possess marijuana in any US state where it has been decriminalized. I imagine th...

Re: Enchanted Valley (Olympic NP) - Jan 25-26

I backpacked through Enchanted Valley in 2006, and at the time, my understanding was that canisters were required mainly because of raccoons habituated to steal human food, and hanging food from wires was recommended to protect against bears raiding your camp. After hauling that canister around, I w...

Re: Benson Bridge closure

I assume there will be no shortage of funding (Perdition Trail, cough) to fix the bridge, yet I wish there was an alternative (Perdition Trail, cough cough) to hike between Multnomah and Wahkeena and make a number of nice loops possible.

Re: Strange but very pretty flower on Dog Mountain

It's Ballhead waterleaf (Hydrophyllum capitum var. Thompsonii). Very cool flower! Welcome to the site! Plants of the PNW Coast is great, but limited in range. I've found Turner and Gustafson's "Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest" by Timber Press to be extremely helpful for a solid, introductory gu...

Re: Getting Started on the Oregon Coast

You can make a full day hiking Saddle Mtn and Fort Stevens, followed up with beer at Forth George in Astoria. Same with hiking Cape Falcon and Neahkanie Mtn in the same day. Any hike around Pacific City ought to wrap up with a 22oz beer from Pelican, to be consumed at sunset at the tip of Cape Kiwan...

Re: Cooper Spur Hike on Mt Hood- 9/16/2012

I was up there on the 17th, just after you, and it was beautiful. One of my favorite places on the mountain... September or early October is my favorite time to visit, and your report captures why. Just as a note, the hike from Cloud Cap to the top of the spur and back is 6.4 miles, and about 2700-2...

Great TR. The high alpine shots, especially "To Infinity and Beyond," are priceless. Holy. Smokes.
