Re: Turkey-Dog Mountain - 2019-05-03
I just saw a turkey on one of the Catherine Creek trails yesterday! Maybe it's the same one!

Favorite Oregon/Washington hikes for Fall colors?
I just thought that I'd ask around and get a few ideas for autumn hikes. I'm originally from a small rural town in Pennsylvania, and fall was a HUGE deal. We had an Autumn Leaf Festival and all kinds of events for a whole week. It was the biggest thing to hit our little town every year. As such, I'v...

Re: Is the Hart's Cove trail still open?
Thanks for the info!!! That doesn't look like the road that Google took me to. It was on the old hwy 101 back in the forest. I think that it might have been the opposite end of the road that you have pictured. Either that or the mapping of that area isn't entirely accurate. I drove around a bit tryi...

Is the Hart's Cove trail still open?
I drove out to the coast today do the Hart's Cove hike. I plugged "Cascade Head Road/1861" into Google Maps. It got me through most of the directions that I saw in my guide book, but when I got to the actual Cascade Head Road/FS 1861 the "road" looked like no more than a horse trail. It was very ove...

Re: Mystery animal in the Columbia
Thanks Karl!!!
I'm going on the assumption that the sea lion ID is probably accurate. The only other animal that sprang to mind was a polar bear. That seems less likely. Ha,ha.

Mystery animal in the Columbia
I was doing the Cape Horn loop hike in the Gorge on July 28th. When I stopped at the Cigar Rock viewpoint I saw this thing floating out in the river. I thought it was just debris at first, but then it started diving and surfacing. Logic would dictate that it's a sea lion, but I've never seen a white...

A day of bipolar weather at Cooper Spur.
I got a late start on my hiking day on Thursday. I had planned on hitting Cooper Spur AND Tamanawas Falls, but I wound up getting to the Cooper Spur parking lot at about 2:30pm. It was my first time doing this hike, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. All that I knew was that there was a stone...

Re: Total fail by me on the Rock of Ages Loop hike...
I think that I made the exact same mistake when I first started hiking out here. Your description of the trail and everything sounds spot on to what I did, except that I thought that the Arch WAS the "Rock of Ages". I was like "YAY!!! I did it!!!" and people on the site were like "No, that's just a ...

Re: Eagle Creek to Wahtum Lake
Thanks for the trail update and pics!!! I was under the impression that the trail was impassible due to the bridge damage, but it seems like it might not be as bad as I thought. :D There were a few break ins at the Eagle Creek trailhead on Thursday or Friday. It's nice to see that some action has be...
