Most important info missing!
Have the larches started turning?
I'll be there in ten days, hoping they are hanging on.

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies

It all depends if you are hiking alone or with friends. If you are with friends, everybody doesn't need to carry a first aid kit or water filter. You can spread those things out among everybody. If I am alone, a different calculus is involved. The central question is, " Would I be able to spend the ...

Re: Enchantment permits: Gov run amok? Consistent w/ wilderness ethos?

I've been to the Enchantments three times. It's well worth it. I agree that the permit process is becoming increasingly difficult, but I am glad that the USFS is restricting access. The Enchantments are a special place. Twice I scored permits for camping outside the core Enchantments area and day hi...

Re: disappointing lifespan for shoes

I have gotten two years so far out of a pair of Salomon Qwest 4D GTX boots.
They are very light, supportive and waterproof.
I use them for everything up until needing crampons.

Re: Drinking Stream Water

There is no right answer to the question of "filter or not" because of the element of chance. If you like your odds, don't filter. The incubation period for giardiasis is at least a week, so most times you won't get it until you are back in civilization. I have contacted giardiasis. My dog has had g...

Re: Overheard on the trail

My son and I were hiking up the Dosewallips River trail in Olympic National Park. My son was about ten years old. We were eight or nine miles into the hike when we spotted a man coming down the trail toward us. He was naked except for a large hat on his head. He didn't see us coming at first. When w...

Re: The fabulous Painted Hills at sunset - 5/27/17

Thank you for posting. Love this place! Agree that bad behavior seems to be increasing on public lands. Enforcement is lax and lessening with each federal budget despite more need. All of us need to (politely) educate the yahoos about trash, boom boxes and switchback cutting. A ranger at PHNM told m...

Or wear gaiters and walk fast.
Have gone through knee deep water in gaiters cinched down and only gotten a few drops inside.

Re: WA PCT, Sect. K, pt. 1: Glacier Peak

Thank you for this, Robin.
This is wonderful, totally evocative.

I once met a father (70's) and son (30's) who hiked together every summer.
They were coming out of Fire Creek Pass and completely covered in bites.
They said the bugs in that drainage were the worst they had ever experienced.
