Re: Wallowas conditions?

Here is a quick report on conditions. On Thursday, we headed up the West Lostine from the Two Pan TH and then veered off along Copper Creek. We didn't see any real snow until the Elkhorn Basin and even then it wasn't an issue. As we left the basin and headed up toward Sky Lake, we encountered larger...

Wallowas conditions?

Beginning on Thursday, a friend and I are planning to do the Lostine-Minam loop in Doug Lorain's book, minus the Minam Lake bit. (Up the Copper Creek drainage from Two Pan, by Swamp and Steamboat Lakes, by North Minam Meadows, up through Wilson and Brownie Basins, probably a detour via Chimney Lake,...

Re: 2 night-backpacking Trip Near-Ish to Portland

The hiking distance isn't quite what you're seeking, but I would recommend Mt. Adams High Camp (also known as Adams Glacier Meadows). I have no idea what conditions are like up there now or when you are planning to go, but I think the area is pretty phenomenal for relatively little effort. I spent t...

Re: How "crowded" is the Wallowas Lakes Basin?

Several years ago, a friend and I hiked up the West Fork Lostine and stayed the first night at Minam Lake. It was very pleasant and we had it to ourselves in mid-August, as I recall. We then hiked up Carper Pass and spent a few nights in the Lakes Basin, went up Eagle Cap, day-hiked to Glacier Lake,...

Re: Ollalie Lake Scenic Area weekender

Perhaps you were already out there, but I was up at Olallie Lake with three kids (5, 8, and 11) myself this past Friday-Saturday and thought you might be interested in a quick report. The last eight-ish miles of road were pretty rough in spots, but doable for ordinary cars if going slow. We began wh...

Re: Recommendation for overnight backpacking with kids this weekend

Thanks! We ended up going to Elk Meadows Saturday-Sunday and it was great. The meadows were beautiful and the kids had fun. They also did very well on the trail, including the Newton crossing. Flies were out during the day and the mosquitoes came out in the late evening, but they weren't too bad.

Re: Sisters Mirror Lake: Campsites Plentiful?

A friend and I spent a night at Sisters Mirror Lake a few years ago. There are a number of campsites around the lake itself, and others in the woods near the numerous other lakes in the area. I don't think you would find a single spot with room for that many people, but you probably could find a few...

Recommendation for overnight backpacking with kids this weekend

A friend and I are planning to take our kids (ages 5 and 7) for an overnight backpacking trip this weekend. Both kids have done this before, but short legs only go so far. We will be leaving from Portland and trying to minimize time in the car. We've been looking at Elk Meadows or Twin Lakes on Mt. ...

Re: Three Sisters Loop - 35 Mile version

I realize you're talking about 30-35 miles, but my trip report from a few years ago describes another (admittedly somewhat longer) route you might wish to consider. My friend and I loved it and we were able to avoid much of the Pole Creek burn, which I think would make up a substantial portion of on...
