Re: Wahkeena-Multnomah loop 3/20/2020

Hey Squid, Maybe the 6th map is at the junction that leads to the platform at the top of Multnomah Falls. I think @Multnomah Falls’ tweet was meant to mean all Lodge facilities are closed (they had been keeping the restrooms open). But you’re correct @CRGNSA is tagging along and leaving the impressi...

Looks like Salmonberry in bloom.
Did you see the new large maps at 6 junctions? Two friends of mine were instrumental in planning and installing them!

Re: Elk Meadows and the Argyle Tree

I’m as puzzled as anyone! I’ve seen this a few times in the Mt Hood NF, including the one headed into Elk Meadows. The only information I can add is, “Maybe it’s more common than we are realizing, and it only reveals itself when the snag sheds its bark?” Maybe we are walking by unrevealed ones all t...

Still Creek Guard Station- Where was it?

My wife and I spent a good part of yesterday trying to find the ruins of the Still Creek Guard Station. A USFS map from 1939 shows the GS to be about 8 miles up Still Creek Rd from US-26. At this location we found a short crude pit-run rock road on the north side of the road, but no evidence of a GS...

Re: Early Timberline Trail Attempt

Yes, we had about a dozen people on the canyon rescue. So lots of help to carry in ropes and equipment. Someone mentioned having not seen the rescue in the news. I would roughly estimate only 10% of our calls get into the news media. Oregon sheriffs log about 1100 SAR calls a year. Our team PNWSAR g...

Re: Early Timberline Trail Attempt

Hi Greg, Your photo of that waterfall brings back a great SAR story from June 2017. Two young ladies from Oklahoma were NOBO on the PCT, hoping to go from TLL to White Pass. After leaving the Paradise Park area and heading down to Ramona they missed the first hard left turn and inexplicably thought ...

Re: Herman Ck / PCT loop

We had a relatively experienced hiker take a day hike up Herman Creek trail to Wahtum Lake last Friday (5/31). In the snow he dropped into Herman Creek canyon (west of Tomlike), thinking he was in the East fork of Herman Creek. He spent the next 38 hours traveling north, downstream, until his shouts...

Re: Timberline Trail conditions in early July

We’ve had a slightly below average snow year (per two SnowTel stations on Mt Hood). July 8th is about as early as I would start, but it should work. You’ll probably see a few snow patches when above 5800’, and the highest section on the east side usually holds snow into August, but it lasts less tha...
