Re: Multnomah Falls Trailhead page(s)

No, there aren't two of them. For some reason (that I haven't figured out exactly), a title word of a FG page sometimes registers as beginning with a lower case letter even though they're all properly capitalized. This can happen in the URL or the user view itself. I'll see to making the other chang...

Re: Pelicans! 11/18/22 Vancouver Lake

I'm surprised the pelicans are still around but maybe, being large birds, they didn't want to go on a long migration in the strong winds. They nest on the east side of the Cascades, but are now seen regularly in large flocks at Smith and Bybee Lakes and Sauvie Island in summer. Great sighting!

Re: Nesmith Point in the snow(!) First tracks on Nov. 3rd.

William Sullivan mentioned a viewpoint somewhere downhill of the summit Last week, we stopped at the normal viewpoint ("Nesmith Point") where, without snow, the red cinder heart of the volcano is exposed. Because of the very fierce and cold winds, as well as untracked snow, we decided not to slog p...

I was blacklisted on one browser (Safari) but was able to post using Firefox. The next day, my Safari connections were fine.

Re: Nesmith Point in the snow(!) First tracks on Nov. 3rd.

Went up to Nesmith Point yesterday with a friend. We were prepared for 30 mph winds ("strong breeze") but they were a lot more than that ("strong gale") above Corky's Corner. The snow began once into the defile and we put on traction. It was almost 2 feet at Nesmith Point, very cold, with the wind w...

Good trip, Don! I guess I missed the window. Everything's going to freeze over now.

Re: Helipad on Devils Peak?

There's a bare spot on the ridge there and I think it's the flat spot the south end of that. Trees have grown up since then (as they have on Devils Peak), so passing through you wouldn't notice it. They didn't need much. Here's the one on what I call Baby Slide Mountain (above Lake Lenore in Bull of...

Re: looking for Cripple Creek #703 10/8 and 10/15

Excellent reconnoitre of the area! I'm surprised they let people past the gate on Pipeline at FR 4630. Three Lynx has been designated a hazmat zone although I believe two or three houses are still there. The trailhead below the surge tank is one of those on their list for "repair" (i.e. dealing with...

Tamarack Rock and Shellrock Mountain (Surveyors Ridge) 10-13-22

In 2009, one of Splintercat’s WyEast Blog posts devoted itself to Tamarack Rock, a then unnamed pile of andesite between the Surveyors Ridge Trail and Surveyors Ridge Road. A poll was held on Oregon Hikers (at that time Portland Hikers) to give the prominence a suitable moniker and the location now ...
