Re: Fire closure maps: OR, WA, CA

I've also tagged all the closed hikes that I know of in the Field Guide, so you can now see a list: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Category:Closed_Trails These will include closures because of the September 2020 fires/winds, the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, and Winter 2021 windstorms. Obviously,...

Re: Map for Strawberry Mountains OR

The latest USFS Strawberry Mountain/Monument Rock Wilderness map came out in 2001. It shows the expanded wilderness boundary so in effect it is up to date except for trail conditions (and there are many trails in that wilderness that have been impacted by fires and subsequent heavy blowdown). Looks ...

Re: Monte Cristo

Thanks. This is the northern trailhead, right? [i.e. not coming from the south (Monte Carlo)]. Never done it that way myself. Glad to hear the trail is in good shape. Posting pictures. There is a Discussion Forum Support forum near the bottom of the forums page. Once you have your text in (and befor...

Fire closure maps: OR, WA, CA

I thought I'd post an updated list of the current closure maps from the September 2020 fires as we get into the summer 2021 hiking season: Big Hollow Fire : Gifford Pinchot National Forest https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd801773.pdf Riverside Fire : Mt. Hood National Forest https...

Re: What/where is "School Canyon"?

Also as per the "canyon" itself. Shadybrook School was in the Tygh Creek valley, and I'm just speculating but the upper Tygh Creek canyon may well have been called School Canyon by locals; it's at least near the trail. Canyons don't have to be named after their creeks/rivers (e.g. Hell's Canyon, Gra...

Triangulation Point (Coast Range) 06-09-21

This 12 ½ mile loop, all on roads that were uninhabited by any vehicle (although I assume there is some dirt bike/4WD traffic on weekends), took me meandering around the headwaters bowl of the North Fork Kilchis River, stopping at two major objectives: Triangulation Point and 100-foot Kilchis Falls....

Re: What/where is "School Canyon"?

I seem to remember that in her book Hiking Mount Hood National Forest (2002), Marcia Sinclair told the story of the naming of the School Canyon Trail. I don't have my own copy, though, so you'll have to get one out from the library if you're interested. She was a FS ranger so had access to old pape...

Re: What/where is "School Canyon"?

Yes, there was a school down in the canyon. A few of those trails on the east side of the Badger Creek Wilderness are named after features that were much lower down because the trails ran up from the lower valleys before the roads were built. Douglas Cabin, Post Camp, and School Canyon are three I c...

Re: Morgan/Summit/Freezeout Loop: 6/4/21

Another very fine trademark report. Love to see these on Hells Canyon!

Seconding drm: keep high, and there's usually nice weather at least through June, maybe into July as well (although occasional drenching thunderstorms).
