Re: Lookingglass-Bear Lakes; Cached Lake Loop (Wallowas) 7-26-21 – 7-29-21

there is a really nice improved campsite at the north end of Main Eagle Meadow. I scoped out the sites at the north end of the meadow on the second day, but I decided not to move. On those hot afternoons, I had become too attached to the bathing pool below my camp! Plus, I had slaughtered most of t...

Lookingglass-Bear Lakes; Cached Lake Loop (Wallowas) 7-26-21 – 7-29-21

It’s been a few years since I’ve been out to the Wallowas and I almost turned back when getting off the freeway at La Grande. The fire pall was so dense that I could barely see the mountains. However, I decided I would play it day by day, and took FR 67 from Medical Springs, a good gravel road, whic...

Re: Help me plan a 5-day Wallowa route

I just spent four days on a shortened version of Bosterson's Cached Lake Loop. I made modifications based on conditions (fire haze, hot and muggy, wanted to relax more). I went up to Lookingglass, Bear, Cayuse Lakes and then also "The Loop": Eagle Lake, Cached Lake, Arrow/Heart Lakes and down Bench ...

Re: Scat ID

I'm going to backtrack on my original ID (cougar) and make it more confusing after checking a few sites and photos of examples online. 1) probably bobcat, from everything I've checked. Unless you have giant feet, it's a good size for bobcat scat (I suppose I should know definitively, but it would in...

Re: Hurricane Creek/Thorp Creek

This will be rather late, I'm afraid. Sorry, don't know about conditions this year, but Thorp Creek is an abandoned trail. It was maintained (logged out) every year by an outfitter who took clients up there to camp in the meadow. I'll bet there was no maintenance last year because of COVID; I don't ...

Re: Wizard Way (Mt. Hood Meadows) 7-17-21

from reading other trip reports, there was likely more trail there. There's more trail to the tree line (just above the chair terminal and to its east) and then just a couple of flags placed above it on open tundra. "Upper Wizard", if there ever would be such a thing, would continue up the ridge ab...

My vote is a cougar.
Agreed. The size and that rope-like formation that issues from the entrails of a catamount. Not uncommon, by the way. They're everywhere and watching us all the time.

Re: Ross Lake East Bank Trail - North Cascades NP

It's your particular plan, i.e. the excursion up to Desolation Peak, which makes this most appealing. Hope I can manage it some day.

Re: Three Fingered Jack Loop and Canyon Creek Meadows

It is marked "One Way" which seems odd. Or is this the name of one of the arms of the trail? Canyon Creek Meadows Trail, basically to decrease impact, has for years been designated as a one-way loop, i.e. if you're out for a short day hike, you're supposed to do it as a loop. Nice pictures and grea...

Re: Sword Fern Way (new Bells Mtn loop)

Thanks for exploring these new trails. Yacolt Burn has both the Appaloosa and Sword Fern on their new trails map, which is not linked to their home page yet:
