Re: Lamberson Spur, passing of a favorite -- 08/29/21

Great to see a Lamberson Spur report! did you follow the crest of the ridge with the scarp/talus along its north side? A few years ago I found what appeared to be the end of the original trail (cut logs, etc.) on an unburned section of the bench at the east end of the ridge (approx. 45.3838; -121.62...

Re: Bull Complex Fire

I just checked Inciweb, and it looks like the fire has burned over the site of the Bull of the Woods Lookout and is starting down into Pansy Basin. It's also burned around both of the Twin Lakes and most of the southern half of Rhododendron Ridge. It's about 200 yards from the Hawk Mountain Lookout ...

Whittier Ridge – Lakes Loop 9-1-21

I camped two nights at the Green River Horse Camp to do some hiking around the northeast side of St. Helens. The campground was deserted the first night, but freezing in the early morning. However, I woke up to clear skies, a welcome contrast to the low chilly clouds of the day before. I arrived at ...

Re: Mount Margaret 8/31-9/1/21

I was in the area at the time. Yes, cold with a low cloud ceiling on the 31st, but the 1st was a great day though cold in the morning. Did Teragram-Whittier Ridge-Lakes loop as a day hike since I didn't have a permit (may post in a couple of days). I should add about your weather issues: there are n...

Re: Eliot Moraine/Tilly Jane Loop (July 26)

Bobcat, which is the real Tie-In Rock? I didn't even know there was a controversy. The big boulder sitting on the ridge beyond Hiroshima Rock is what every source I look at calls Tie-in Rock. I know the reddish outcropping you're describing, basically the beginning of the climb proper, but I've nev...

I'd also rule out bear, since bears are 80+% vegetarian and this is the scat of a pure carnivore. Cougar, most likely.

Re: Eliot Moraine/Tilly Jane Loop (July 26)

Took a couple of boys up above Tie-in Rock last week. We descended via the moraine trail. Unfortunately, their benchmark for glacier withdrawal will be your 2021 photo.

Re: Gorge Loop: return route recommendation

ditto . . . Casey Creek would be your most challenging route, especially if you've never done it before. I haven't seen it this year, so it could be much worse . . . or slightly better. There are two sections of Gorton Creek above Deadwood Camp that required a little poking around to stay on route, ...
