Pats Cabin Canyon and other obscure trails 5-18 & 5-19-22
I returned to the Painted Hills area to investigate some intriguing routes in the Pats Canyon and Sutton Mountain wilderness study areas. My camp for two nights was on a rutted track near Stovepipe Spring, near the Priest Hole-Twickenham road. This is about five miles north of the Painted Hills. Cow...

Re: Ecola State Park to Indian Beach
Yep, that is some squelchy route. Only way to mitigate that is to spend a lot of time and effort putting graveled, well-drained turnpikes along most of it.

Thanks for the heads up on this new trail. Do they have a timeline on completion of the trail?

Re: Food storage for bears
A bear canister is also a good hedge against small critters that may gnaw their way into your tent/food supply. I use one mainly for that purpose. Especially if I'm using a base camp and doing day hikes from there, I don't want to carry my food with me all day to thwart the camp rodents. Hanging foo...

Re: Hells Canyon: 5/10/22-5/11/22
Another sterling report. It's looking lovely out there! Re: Dug Bar Road. It's a wonderful drive, one of the most scenic in Oregon. I did it in a Honda CR-V around this time of year after the road had dried out. No problems - but it should definitely be avoided when wet. Clearance is not an issue fo...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail 501 to Plaza Trail 781 Connector
Here's a 12-year-old trip report about a loop using that same ridge. No mention of any trace of a trail. If there was a trail there, it disappeared long ago and perhaps was not frequently used anyway. https://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5285 And the original post by pablo which mentio...

Re: Rock Creek and Nelson Creek near Stevenson
I've done some advisories and strike thrus regarding Nelson Creek Falls. Posters here usually do not knowingly post about forays onto forbidden land. If they do, the reports are rescinded at the time. I'm working on the assumption that access was "tolerated" at the time of the post but the situation...

Re: SE Oregon Flowers
The "heather" is a rather rare plant in the mustard family: Polyctenium fremontii (desert combleaf).

I must say, I don't think I've ever had a 500 or a 522. Those are new ones on me.

Re: Painted Hills 4-29-22
The little/short trails is actually what has kept me from visiting the Painted Hills more. There are quite a few nearby trails to fill out a day if you're staying in the area, including in the Mill Creek Wilderness and on Sutton Mountain. I was with my wife, who was satisfied with the painted lands...
