Old Trip Reports
Hey all. Haven't been here in a long time. Looks like a lot has changed. In the past we were able to look at our own trip reports or posts from when we first joined PortlandHikers.org years ago. Is that still possible? Can't seem to be able to locate any Forestkeeper only stuff. Was hoping to look a...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
Does anyone know how much of the Eagle Creek Trail 440 got burned? I was thinking since the fire originated at Punchbowl Falls that it worked itself northward towards Metlako then onward to Ruckel Creek Falls area. But also if it joined with the Indian Creek Fire, does that mean the area around Loow...

12052386_823490451103662_7175221226450266150_o.jpg We all know it will grow back, eventually. But this is so gut wrenching!  The Eagle Creek Trail #440 was my most favorite trail ever. Especially during springtime, listening to all the Eagle's "chirp, chirp, chirp," as you hiked from the...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
The Forest Service asked TKO to post an alert tonight about a fire adjacent to the Eagle Creek Trail (in the Gorge) somewhere south of the wilderness boundary (which is roughly at WyEast Creek, or just beyond 4.5 mile bridge). The trail is now closed at the wilderness boundary. They are asking folk...

Re: New Bridge On Eagle Creek Trail
That new bridge was helicoptered in a few months ago. Not too sure how a composite plastic bridge will hold up to freezing temps next winter. You know what freezing plastic does when struck by fast moving objects (anothr tree or branch during winter wind storm)? It shatters! But a plastic bridge is ...

Re: Tick Deschutes 4/23/2017
Are you ok, now that's been a couple of days? Is there anything to help prevent ticks from getting access to your skin? 100% Deet?

Re: Rescue at Abiqua Falls
I haven't been to Abiqua falls myself, is the trail along a cliff or just a really steep sloped hillside? Or do you think they were off trail exploring and just lost their footing? The "trail" is terribly steep and at an average of a 70* angle for 50% of the hike. You have to descend/ascend by rope...

Re: true story - why knowing UTM coordinates can be helpful
Maybe that was before backcountry transponders were in existence. But it is very wise to carry a topo map of the area you will be in and be able to plot your course as well as be able to report your location (to SAR) if need be within 10 meters, not 100 meters. Latitude/ longitude bearings are a nec...

Re: Triple Falls 031017
Nice TR Don! My friend and I decided to check out the new Tish Creek bridge (made of plastic) just past upper Punchbowl Falls. Eagle Creek pretty much looked like the Triple Falls trail; a few patches of snow on the trail and a lot of downed logs and branches. Time to break out the saws and shovels....

Re: Coast range snow??
From Gales Creek to Bridge Creek, it's under snow. This isn't normal for the Pacific Northwest, but it's a good thing with all the snow pack.
