Re: Rogue-Umpqua Divide conditions for summer '23?

I wrote an overview of this entire trail back in 2020 , with updates in 2021. The FS did some work between Huckleberry and Abbott Butte in 2018 and the Siskiyou Mountain Club (a good source of info on trail conditions in S Oregon) restored the section from Yellow Jacket to Rocky Rim in August 2021. ...

Re: Inactive members: where are they now?

Well, I did retire (twice actually) and we moved to Southern Oregon for 7 years. Much hiking ensued. Then family matters necessitated a move East, so now we are in Minnesota. Not the same as Oregon, but SO many trees! Still hiking as much as possible - just not as far or as fast as during my Portlan...

Re: Sediments Creek (Yukon Territory, Canada) 16-Aug-2018

That trail looks way too good to just be a casual "user trail". Do you think it was an old miner's trail? No, it was started - in the 1980s I think - by Sobek Expeditions, who ran the Tatshenshini back then. From what our guides said, almost every rafting trip now stops at Sediments Creek (easy lan...

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies

I recognize that what constitutes "enough" gear is based on a series of highly personal decisions - ranging from "It'll never happen to me" to "OMG, what if I'm hit by an asteroid?" So one size isn't ever going to fit all (or even one person all the time). This post sums up my many years of fooling ...

Re: Box Camp Trail (Marble Mountain Wilderness) 03-Oct-2017

Do you know if it would be possible to start this trail from the end of 44N59YA? Every step saved at the start would get me one step farther at the end. There's supposed to be a gate on 44N59Y just past the parking area for the trailhead. I don't recall seeing it either because it's no longer there...

Re: Sediments Creek Hike (Yukon Territory, Canada)

Great looking hike! Now for the most important question: how were the bugs? Not nearly as bad as we'd expected. Very few mosquitos. Some little biting flies that you didn't notice until the itching started. But not too many of those either. We've had much, much worse in the Indian Heaven or Sky Lak...

Sediments Creek (Yukon Territory, Canada) 16-Aug-2018

Earlier this month, we rafted the Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers in Canada (Yukon Territory) and Alaska (Glacier Bay National Park). We’d planned this trip months in advance but were fortunate that it allowed us to escape the wildfire smoke that has been choking Southern Oregon (and inhibiting our hi...

Re: Eagle Cap - Cusick and Sacajawea - 8/2-8/5/18

Looks like you had a wonderful, but intense, trip to the Wallowas this year. :D Love those shots of climbing along the north ridge. And Sac and back to Portland in the same day - ah, youth... Did you recover Ben's body or is it still lying next to that creek? ;)

Re: Favorite scenic spot in the Wallowas

Ice Lake is (relatively speaking) easy to get to and often crowded. But with the right lighting, Matterhorn above the west side of the lake can be quite colorful. https://photos.smugmug.com/2013-08-08-Ice-Lake-Wallowas/i-LzHPVrJ/0/b2388ba3/L/1-IMGP6379-L.jpg Ice Lake at sunrise If you’re up for a cl...
