Re: Free days in Ridgefield NWR

A few years ago, a bald eagle swooped down and grabbed a small rabbit about forty feet in front of me in my "back yard". Didn't hear it come down or fly off, if I hadn't seen it it would have never happened. It was HUGE! That would have been pretty cool to see :). No big bodies of water and...

Re: Free days in Ridgefield NWR

In my experience at Steigerwald, the Red Tailed hawks are very wary of people, but the Coopers hawks that perch on the fence posts allow people moving at walking speed to get within about 50-60 feet before casually flying away. Different behaviors due to different conditions at different areas? Tha...

Re: Free days in Ridgefield NWR

I'm no expert but that looks likely to be an immature male Red Tail to me. Coopers Hawks (both mature and immature) have just several wide/even black bands on a long, greyish tail. This one has numerous, thin, irregular black strips on a short, brown tail which RT have in their first year feathers. ...

Re: Middle Sister and Broken Top -- Suggestions please

Thanks Ron. Is the Chambers area accessible to both the Southern Ridge as well as the Northern Ridge of Middle Sister? And, is it normally crowded during summer time? As Koda noted, it would be a very roundabout route, and it would also include the Hayden glacier travel with it's crevasses. Persona...

Re: Middle Sister and Broken Top -- Suggestions please

Safe is a relative word so I won't say that but I would say that the north route is basically an easy walk up. The hike from the south is also easy but it is somewhat steeper and lacks any defined trail, and as Don said, is loose, slide-y, tippy talus fields for large stretches of the climb, so it ...

Re: Middle Sister and Broken Top -- Suggestions please

I've done Middle Sister from the N and think that way might be a little too steep and loose to qualify as an easy/safe scramble. The S side seems better. Safe is a relative word so I won't say that but I would say that the north route is basically an easy walk up. The hike from the south is also ea...

LOL . What a positively (er, negatively) ridiculous thread. It's just a fricking hiking web site for cripes sake!!! Who gives a crap what the hell it's called? It never ceases to amaze me the totally stupid things people get all tweaked out over. The phrase, "Get a life" comes to mind..... ron

Re: Elk Mtn and Elk Creek Trail - Jan 10, 2015

Wow, it's amazing how bare of snow it is up there this year! Looks like it was a fun trip. If you're looking for alternatives, my favorite longer, multi-peak route is a lolly-pop that goes up Kings and around to the junction, down around Elk Creek trail, up Elk and then all the way back around the r...

Re: Climate Change is destroying XC skiing

Saw this NASA/NOAA report mentioned on the news this morning: http://www.nasa.gov/press/2015/january/nasa-determines-2014-warmest-year-in-modern-record/ The year 2014 ranks as Earth’s warmest since 1880, according to two separate analyses by NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (...
