Re: Need Input: Compilation of trails closed in Columbia Gor
Tanner area is a no go for now. They have someone sitting at exit 40 around the clock, to make sure no one tries to go anywhere other than Bonneville Dam. BPA is using the Tooth Rock parking area as a staging area for something they are doing. A company with the name Granite on their vehicles (hopef...

Re: Fred Beckey passes away
A long life and well lived. My copies of Cascade Alpine Guide date to 1979, and they were invaluable in the days before online resources. He could write too - Range of Glaciers: The Exploration and Survey of the Northern Cascade Range is a classic.

Re: Gorge closure order
There are people (rangers, FS employees, others?) at several closed exits on 84 who have the job of keeping people out of the closed areas. They are supplied with porta potties, so I'm guessing they are there for a while. There's even a ranger waiting at the PCT in CL. They had ODOT and OSP vehicle...

Re: Eagle Creek Fire Damage Photos (9/20/2017)
I have driven I-84 westbound a few times since it reopened. Can't stop for photos, or even slow down enough for a good look, but the rain is starting to wash away enough soot to see what might still be at least slightly green. Entrance to Eagle Creek looks very damaged - no surprise there. The picni...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
Anyone who was visiting Tunnel Falls, or doing any kind of loop involving Eagle Creek, on September 2, was doing so illegally. Due to the Indian Creek fire, which had been burning since someone ignited it with fireworks on July 4, Eagle Creek was closed from High Bridge to Wahtum Lake, along with c...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
Due to the Indian Creek fire, which had been burning since someone ignited it with fireworks on July 4 I've heard this from several different people now but have never been able to find out the source of this info. I never found anything online, and on Inciweb the Indian Creek Fire is still listed ...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
"The only hiker near the Midtlyng group who was equipped" "near" is not the entire 150 Morfeover, its inconcievable that the only people trapped upstream of the fire were punchbowlers. what about those hiking out after visiting Tunnel? about those camped beyond, or doing a backp[ack loop. Most like...

Re: Preventing the next fire
I have lost count of the number of times I have seen hikers with campfires in prohibited areas - often with their fires right under one of those red on yellow posters that say something like "no campfires - no open flames - no fireworks", with pictograms and all. Not to mention any number of similar...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)
High Bridge is steel and though the tread may burn the structure should survive unless a tree falls on it. The new bridge at Tish is a thermoset composite with a wood tread and unless it gets extremely hot, should survive. - again, unless a tree falls on it! I am going to disagree with that one. Wo...
