"Into the Canyon" Documentary

I just did a blog post to recommend the documentary "Into the Canyon" that is available to watch via the National Geographic Channel. My post is titled Timely... because this is the Grand Canyon National Park's 100th Anniversary and I have an upcoming backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. Timely Doc...

Neahkahnie Mountain from North 1/24/19

https://higheredtechtalk.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/img_3727.jpg I have lived near the coast of Oregon for 14 years and have never visited the Neahkahnie Mountain which is a part of the Oswald West State Park. I took the hike from the North with the trailhead starting at a parking lot pullout on H...

Re: Henline Mountain Lookout w/snow

Yes the snow only got deep where it levels out before the final climb, 6-8 inches. It was fresh snow so a bit treacherous with the rocks underneath. I did want to camp up there but I chickened out even though I just got Brook a puff jacket. I didn't see places that looked flat enough for a tent exce...

Henline Mountain Lookout w/snow

Retirement means you can go on a hike when conditions are optimum, which is what I did today Dec. 3 going up Henline Mountain Trail #3352. For some reason we have many days of sunshine beginning here in Oregon so I decided to touch winter by way of Henline Mountain. I really did not expect there to ...

Re: Adams - north side hike 10/12-14/2018

Thanks for the great TR. I now feel better about exploring Adams and it looks like the North approach is a good option.

Also May consider big sticks on the tent to address wind conditions.

Re: Tillamook Head Trail from Seaside

Got to the Hikers Camp at dusk and nobody was there. Most hikers only go in to the first view spot less then 2 miles in. I sense that it is not perceived as a backpacking trail maybe because the trailhead does not allow overnight parking.

Tillamook Head Trail from Seaside

A great backpacking trip in November when the weather is nice is the Tillamook Head Trail through Ecola State Park. I went on this trip with Brook and my new friend, Judd Beck, whom I met on my Timberline Trail trip in September. We arrived at the Seaside Trailhead to find that there was no overnigh...

Re: McNeil Point Overnight from Top Spur TH

The short cut scramble trail is fairly obvious now. I thought about trying it out but wanted to take the more gentle and pleasing route up. When I checked out the shortcut trail to go down, I felt like it was a bit dangerous to go down by myself.
