Re: Central Cascades permit fees announced

Was there any mention about enforcement or fines for not complying? Are there going to be rangers at every trailhead and all through each wilderness? What if I enter from a place that is not a trailhead, like bushwhacking off-trail from a road? Would that be considered non-compliance? What if the wh...

Re: Need Advice on Wallowa Trip

1. Definitely less people after Labor Day. Weekdays even less.
2. Eagle Cap. Right in the center of the wilderness. Easiest of them all.
3. Probably enough trees.
4. The upper lakes in the basin, of course. The view from Glacier Pass. Same for Polaris Pass. The East/West Wallowa River loop is classic.

Re: Hurwal Divide Traverse: 8/22/19-8/23/19

So 26 hours - did you spend the night out there? Yeah, I camped at Ice Lake. So on the way down, did you actually use that Chief Joseph trail, or just cross it? The express route is the route I took after the avalanche chute. It crosses the Chief Joseph Mt. trail twice. It is much steeper and much ...

Bear Poop?

I live about a mile outside the city limits of The Dalles. There are tablelands with trails next to my property. Several times up there I have seen what looks like bear poop. This morning while walking my dog on the trails on my property there was a pile that looked like bear poop. Take a look at th...

Re: Wallowas Super Loop: 8/1/19-8/2/19

Some might get their exercise another way so take the tram up but I find that I need that part of a trip. So I wonder just how bad it would be to head up Aneroid Peak from the nearby lake in that loose stuff - at least with a daypack at that point. About how much EG in the loose stuff? The route fr...

Re: Do you register when entering a wilderness area?

I used to always fill out a permit, with accurate information, when entering a wilderness. While the information may be used to know how to spread trail maintenance dollars, it may have been used in the past, and may be used in the future for other purposes. Like restricting access. Now I only fill ...

Re: Wallowas Super Loop: 8/1/19-8/2/19

That's a big second day though! I was at Frazier Lake last year and was eyeing Sentinel, but it wasn't part of the plan then. The skies in your first pics look a bit hazy - is there fire smoke out there? Yeah, lots of miles on day 2, mostly downhill though. I can go downhill and level all day. It’s...

Re: Snow on Three Sisters Loop trails?

This last weekend I did some hiking on trails around Broken Top. Some of those trails included part of the Three Sisters loop. There was significant snow in certain areas, requiring GPS navigational assistance. We passed a mother and daughter doing the entire loop, so people are doing it already. Th...
