Cave Falls on Big Creek

About three years to the day from my first encounter with the depths of Cave Falls, I decided to make a return journey. Water was surprisingly high for September, but wasn't terribly cold. There were a few minor changes though. I have my friend Evan Topinka to thank for my first encounter with Cave....

Re: Valhalla Canyon Trip ~ Breitenbush River

Thanks Chip! Yeah, I imagine it is similar to your ice caves! You can certainly accomplish fantastic pics, but you have to put the effort in! And yes, though hyperbole canyon is a bit mean, it is and isn't apt. I mean personally, I feel like every piece of wilderness deserves to be cherished and ele...

Valhalla Canyon Trip ~ Breitenbush River

Last Saturday I returned to Valhalla, taking advantage of the cooler temps, which make the 1600 feet of elevation gain on the way out much more reasonable! It was interesting to find that the road has been improved, ever so slightly that is. It is still incredibly rough, and a 4x4 is highly re...

Henline Falls in Snow

Zach-Forsyth-Henline-Falls-Oregon-Creek-Snow-Winter-Vertical.jpg Last week I got to see an Oregon classic in the snow! We weren't feeling ambitious, so we didn't continue up to all of the falls on the stream. However, we did make it up to Dan Falls. Such a lovely stream in all seasons! Personally I...

Parkett Creek

A few weeks ago I got to hit what has become an Oregon canyoning classic. Parkett Creek is a beautiful stream south of Detroit Lake. For competent bushwhackers, viewing the two lowest tiers of Parkett Creek Falls isn't especially difficult. However, seeing all five tiers requires technical canyoning...

Oh it's a hike. Just one interspersed with swimming and floating! Lots of streambed hiking involved!

South Santiam River ~ Packrafting ~ Tomco Falls and Narrows

Zach-Forsyth-South-Santiam-River-Tomco-Falls-Oregon-Waterfall-Packrafting.jpg Yesterday, my buddy Nick once again introduced me to a fantastic joint! In this case, it was a roadside gorge. As opposed to wilderness, this one had innumerable signs of human love. There were cables across at various in...

Re: Tup'so Falls ~ Warren Creek ~ Columbia Gorge

Thanks Tom! And actually, there's another stream my buddies and I are considering approaching you and Trailkeepers of Oregon about... There's a stream up the Clackamas that I'm writing one of my little trail books on, Whale Creek, that is crying out for a trail. There are four amazing waterfalls on ...

Re: Dark Creek Falls ~ Diving into the depths!

Thanks Webfoot and Chip Down! Chip - yeah, at least in my case, it's generally a combination of scouting, experience, and being prepared with the right tools (long enough rope, wetsuit if needed, rope bag if needed, etc.). My buddy Nick does carry a Spot device on our trips just in case though!
