Re: All-New for 2018! A snow level thread.
Foot deep snow on the entire stretch of the Pioneer-Indian Trail up Mt Hebo the last half mile or so to the road crossing which would be more or less 2,500'. FAR more than would be expected.

Pioneer-Indian Trail (Mt Hebo) trail re-route
So there's been a substantial logging project underway on Mt Hebo and from just past the mile mark at the grassy road crossing where you get to the little mini-lake up to the road has been really changed. At least a mile. There was a lot more snow than expected so it was hard to tell how much but it...

Ramona Falls 1/14
If you have any plans on trying this over the winter I have a pretty detailed look at the only safe looking crossing of the Sandy in the album linked below. Keep in mind a couple things... Lots of icy patches and snow. The gate is closed at the Sandy River bridge for cars. Add about 2.5 miles of wal...

Re: Hidden Lake Trail
Damn, good job. There was a lot more snow than I expected too. I would've never made it to Burnt Lake with no snowshoes based on the conditions going to Ramona Falls.

Re: Cloud Cap Road - road open / road conditions?
There's probably exceptions somewhere (if there are residences maybe) but I don't think any forest service roads get plowed once you've crossed into fs lands.. FS roads are federal and the state/ODOT are in charge of plowing. They have other priorities. A couple lower elevation examples... they'll p...

Re: Conditions at Ramona Falls
Some boring rainy day I'll go thru the old pictures but I could swear at some point years ago that was the spot we used to cross at. At least one of them.. If not, that almost exact setting is at some other crossing on a Mt Hood trail with the parallel logs and big solid rocks in between at either e...

Re: Conditions at Ramona Falls
Cross at the spot in the last 4 pictures of this album from today. It's about 100 yards or so (roughly) past the recently wiped out spot. We saw one person cross there today and said , 'screw that' (in slightly stronger language... ). The path continues and it's basically the next easyish entr...

Re: Zinke proposes $70 entrance fee at some National Parks
A cynical soul might think.... ...gee, if we can keep low and middle income America out of the National Parks without it looking intentional they won't really have any reason to fight so hard to protect them. And those natural resource extraction corporations have boatloads of cash.... But they woul...

Re: Conditions at Ramona Falls
I remember meeting Gene on Burnt Lake trail when he was removing flagging he had put up when it was snowy :) I would put up flagging myself. If people are going to attempt to cross, better to help them cross at the safest spot. Just my opinion. Snow is tricky. What looks so easy going in looks comp...

Re: Conditions at Ramona Falls
If you go approx. 1/2 mile or so past the now washed out spot you should be able to see the little footpath down to the Sandy that's on the other side and will take you right up to the big loop trail junction spot. It might even be flagged. IF there's a spot to get across there, and it's super wide ...
