Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

This was a great read. You are so brave! I would've lost my damn mind when I saw those eyes in the dark.

Good for you ignoring the haters. I've had people mind my business on easy hikes where it is virtually impossible to get lost, most recently Misery Ridge at Smith Rock.

Re: Goat Rocks Lily Basin Monday July 22 - Wednesday July 24, 2019

Gah, I love it there so much - thanks for the report! I have yet to see photos that capture the beauty and scale of the Goat Ridge approach to the lake. I passed through at sunrise one morning and seriously almost cried at how pretty it was. Although, when I was there again a couple weeks ago, I was...

Yikes, I hadn't realized that area was bare yet, either. Time to get out there! Thanks for the report.

Possibly Rae Lakes? I'm only chiming in because that might be Painted Lady in the background.

Re: Missing hiker believed to be victim of cougar attack

I don't know if it's super helpful for hikers to harp on this idea any more that it's statistically more dangerous to drive on the freeway or whatever. I do it myself when someone gives me unsolicited advice on solo hiking. However, being eaten is significantly more scary for most people than a car ...

Re: Best 4 day hiking trip in the Pacific Northwest?

Get yourself to the the Alpine Lake Wilderness. There is no substitute for Washington alpine scenery. Base in Leavenworth and dayhike into Colchuck, Stuart, etc, then shoot over to Cle Elum and hike into Jade Lake on Mt Daniel and Lake Ingalls. No coast but you sound like you want the best the area ...

Re: WA PCT, Sect. J: The Alpine Lakes!

Well, I mean, you could put this on a book jacket and I would buy the book: "And I started to cry in that way you only do when you've grown up, not exactly at being sad, but at being acutely confronted by life's shape. At the strangeness of time. At the worlds you built with your brother at the edge...

Re: WA PCT, Sect. J: The Alpine Lakes!

This might be one of my favorite trips reports ever both in terms of locale and story. I love Mount Daniel and seeing those pictures of the hard-to-get-to Spectacle Lake gave me goosebumps, but I have to say you really are an exceptional writer!
