Re: McNeil Pt/bird encounter 3/17/15

These birds can provide quite an entertainment. In Colorado, they made off with 1/2 napkin pile of potato chips just to provide us with a more healthy lunch. Took 3 of them about 5 trips each. BTW they are not jays, they are Clark's nutcrackers.

Re: Ape Canyon Hike

Don't know if anyone will read this and its taken me awhile to post it but, in apology to Bobcat, I have carefully studied my topo's and am adding at least 900 feet to my first estimate of a 1350 climb. That makes Bobcat's posted EG as good a number as any. Thank you

Re: Indian Heaven - Abandoned trails (and fall colors) 9.20-

I was up to Indian Heaven yesterday and while the color is definitely on the decline as you said, Indian Heaven is still heaven. I know this is not the off-trail site, but as you were sharing the "unofficial" trails I frequent, I thought I would add the short (1/4 mile +/-) connector trail from the ...

Re: Indian Heaven via NFD 240 31-August-2014

This solves a long story for me. In the late 80's my son and I hiked into Blue Lake from the Thomas lake trail for two nights. While there I got talking to another father camped there with his son, while the sons were both making "rafts" of logs and floating them on the lake. He told me they had com...

Mt St Helens area JRO to Soouth Coldwater trailhead one-way

I haven't posted many hikes this year. They pale in comparison with many others, but I thought my experience with this hike might give others some creative ideas. I did the first portion of this hike from Johnson Ridge Observatory(JRO) to above St Helens lake on June 22nd last summer. As I was trudg...

Criterion Ranch

Yesterday I took my first hike at Criterion Ranch. Not sure to whom this might appeal but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The property was purchased by the BLM about 10 years ago to develop greater access to the Deschutes river canyon. There has been little development to date. They still rent it out for c...

Re: Wichita Mountains NWR - OK - 4/27

I lived about 50 miles west of the Wichita Mt NWR for 2 yrs in the early 70's. Its a fascinating place and was usually empty on trails or just cross country even a mile from the road. The refuge was created out of the outlying part of Ft. Sill in the early 1900'sm to preserve a small buffalo herd th...

Re: A Cold Cookie on Silver Star 05-Dec-2013

Your use of the day was certainly better than a meeting with the Gresham planning dept. Your pictures are great as usual, but my first impression was thankfullness at the detail of the trail change so I have a chance of not getting myself turned around again on the next chance i get to do this one a...
