Re: Nine Days in the Wind River Range, WY (Sept 2-10, 2023)

What a great trip! And a very fine trip report also! Beautiful photos.

I spent some time in that general area, mainly on horseback, about thirty years ago. Your report makes me think I should get back there.

Re: Best Day of the Week to Hike

I've been retired for a number of years and I basically hike only on weekdays. I can't say that there is any obvious pattern to figuring which days will be busy and which will not. I don't avoid any of the days Monday through Friday--they're all better than the weekends. In the summer, the most popu...

Re: Forest Service employee arrested for prescribed burn

As I recall, he Grant County Sheriff was in active support of the Bundy occupation of the Malheur reserve and on the night one of the occupation leaders was killed and the Bundys arrested the car caravan was headed to Grant County to an event where he was to speak. This may have some bearing on his...

Re: Forest Service employee arrested for prescribed burn

So far, there has been a lot of news coverage about the background of the case and all the animosities among various local factions. But I haven't seen anything about why the fire got out of control, or whether there were mistakes in planning or execution of the prescribed burn. It seems to me that ...

Re: Hikers criminally charged for calling SAR

I changed the title from "Hikers charged for SAR" to "Hikers criminally charged for calling SAR." The latter is perhaps more accurate but I think the former actually better captures the outcome, in that they had to make a substantial payment but ultimately weren't convicted of a criminal offense. It...

Hikers criminally charged for calling SAR

Two hikers faced criminal charges in New Hampshire for calling for search and rescue. https://www.backpacker.com/news-and-events/news/hikers-charged-reckless-conduct-new-hampshire-rescue/ I can imagine circumstances where it might be appropriate to charge someone for calling SAR, but this doesn't se...

Re: Gifford Pinchot fees

I've been hiking USFS trails in MHNF and GPNF since the late 1980s and it is very clear to me that the trails today do not measure up to the quality they were 30-35 years ago. As the fees increase, the quality decreases. I've been hiking here since the late 1970s and I agree that the state of trail...

one can summit Devils Rest from Wahkeena trailhead without getting a scratch if you take the Primrose Path
Outstanding! Last week the "official" route, trail 420C, was a jungle, resulting in many scratches. Thanks for the report.

Re: Gifford Pinchot fees

I'm sure we would all like to feel that our vehicles were secure while we are out hiking. I don't know if anything can reasonably be done to make trailhead parking truly secure, but any level of enforcement would be welcome. Sorry to hear about your experience at church. As you say, it seems that no...
