Re: Eagle Cap: Cached at Cached Lake

Thanks for the great TR. How were the mosquitoes? Could you hang outside without getting swarmed too badly?

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Has the period started for publicly commenting on the fees for this proposal? This article said it was supposed to start in June.

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Apparently, they're going to do a lot with these fees! The FS has already said they'd spend the money on the following (see full quotes below): "expanded office hours" "additional rangers" "trail maintenance" Glad this wasn't about money. 😊 "Visitor compliance is one of many activities we expect to ...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Keith, By your take, MSH climbing permits, Mt Adams pass, and permits for enchantments, are not valid either? Enchantments especially seems to provide a pretty established and enforced example of charging for hiking/overnight permits. Another great question! It's hard to know the source of the Fore...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Under FLREA §6802.(g)(2)(G), the expanded amenity fee can be charged for "Use of reservation services." Good questions. Oh, the fun of statutory interpretation :D The reference to "reservation services" is a "Expanded Amenity Recreation Fee." Just for the sake of argument, let's assume they can cha...

So do we have any specialized lawyers who will deal with this? Hikers as a user group are pretty disorganized. What options are there?
If others are interested in this possibility, please shoot me a PM (note: I am not handling this case, but it's possible that we could find somebody who could)

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

And in order to make a legal case, it would be necessary to show the FS did not follow the procedures required by applicable law, or that the plan in itself constitutes a violation of existing law. I doubt either path is very promising . . . . I disagree. These fees very much violate the Federal La...

Hells Canyon, April 24-28

Just finished a great trip with a buddy to Hells Canyon. This is my third trip here, and the place never fails--super tough, but super rewarding backpacking. And nobody was there, even though this is prime season. IMG_5048 - Copy.JPG The grass around the Snake was the greenest I'd ever seen this tim...

Re: NW Forest Pass and Missing Amenities

Re: the law's expiration.

It is slated to expire Sept. 30, 2020. But Congress has extended it multiple times since 2014 through "continuing resolutions."

Re: NW Forest Pass and Missing Amenities

For $35 a year do you expect a permanent security person monitoring your car? Could you throw in a valet too, please? :) I think we're all getting to the same point. To actually provide the six amenities that they claim to provide, the FS would have to develop an entirely different fee structure. I...
