Crater Lake to Crescent City?
Hello all. I'm currently in Somalia on deployment. I'll be home and out in the woods just before September. It may be too late this year, but I'm interested in a hike from Crater Lake to Crescent City. My plan is to have my gf drop me off and pick me up, and on both ends of the hike we enjoy the loc...

Wildwood trail in a day
Hiked it yesterday from north to south. Took a Lyft from Vietnam Veterans Memorial to north trailhead. Around $47 for the ride. $8 for the day parking (ends 20:00). I carried a 30 lb pack loaded with Gatorade and jerky and some filler (woobie, iPad, other stuff for weight) I didn’t actually get on t...

Re: Opal Creek to Twin Lakes via Whetstone Mnt and Beachie S
How were the trails? Many trees down? On that leg, about 5 or so. Most were easily handled. I had a 42 lb pack on and my legs were pretty sore from a crossfit workout with deadlifts and lunges, plus just hiking up the mountain. So yeah, deep squats weren't happening on trail. The trails were good s...

Re: Opal Creek to Twin Lakes via Whetstone Mnt and Beachie S
Nice trip - that is a beautiful area, but Twin Lakes can be really busy. I'm curious what app/website you took those screen shots from. Interesting view of your tracks! I used GaiaGPS app on my iPhone to record the track. I kept the phone in airplane mode all day and was able to do it just fine. Li...

Someone vandalized the wilderness box with a sharpie, saying that it was a long boring path. Not true. Perhaps they are discouragin...

Re: What small gear do you love?
I'll take soldiers out on 12 mile ruck marches, or training patrols, and they are all jealous when I pop up a small Primus stove and make a cup of coffee. Just because I'm walking 12 miles with a ruck doesn't mean I can't sip a cup of coffee while doing it. A lot of my fellow instructors have the la...

Re: true story - why knowing UTM coordinates can be helpful
I agree. I teach land navigation skills to US Army infantry, including a bit on map reading, plotting, etc. In our training we will do a 12 mile ruck march in under 5 hours, with minimum 68 lbs of gear, then add weapons, and go. Some people are not prepared for the demands of this weight and we regu...

Re: Hello, I'm Eddie
Shouldn't be too hard as long as I have a compass and a map of the area. Either using the intersection or modified intersection techniques after I can find a decent view of my surroundings. Easy.

Hello, I'm Eddie
Where you're from I currently reside in St Johns. I'm born/raised in Arkansas/Mississippi. Lived in California, Texas, Eugene, now Portland. Your experience level I'm not a hardcore hiker, certainly not an ultralight type. But I am infantry and am used to carrying entirely too much gear on entirely...
