Re: 1928 train wreck in the columbia river gorge

I just re-read the Newpaper articles from Jan 3-5 1928. The wreck was west just west of the "Oneonta Siding", thus between Oneonta Gorge and Multnomah Falls. I guess I could have stated this in my first reply, but I'm kinda dense sometimes! It is fun to play "name that hillside" though, isn't it! ch...

Re: Sleeping Beauty

Dean, I hoped that you might know the story of the wee gravestone for a turtle that is installed atop Sleeping Beauty. It's a mystery to me, but I love getting up there and hanging out with the spirit of long-departed "Tuter the Turtle" for a bit. Roughly 46.093517° -121.648923° my pix are on GoogEa...

Re: Skylight Cave / McKenzie Pass 6/4

Well done Gene, Bravo! I love the 20-minute time window and I've got fond memories of smoldering tissue paper. As the pros say "nice capture"!
cheers, scott

Re: 1928 train wreck in the columbia river gorge

Great find HikerDude!! I was unaware of this historic wreck, so I super appreciate the head's up, as it mirrors the "Starvation Creek" snowpocalypse from the 1880s...but this one has actual newspaper photos. Oh, I guess I got ahead of myself. The wreck happened on Jan 1st 1928..and there was extensi...

Re: Lower Starvation Loop (Apr 20) + Q for Geocachers?

Splinter, I went down to the rash rack late last fall and then over to Lancaster Falls...and the boot path wasn't nearly this "trodden"...so it seems from ur pic that some waterfall-loving gnomes have been improving it this spring maybe. For my part I'm glad that Curious Gorge isn't to blame for a c...

Re: A different view of Upper McCord and Elowah Falls

Yay for the new loop option....cheers for the shout-out Brian. It'll definitely be in my next edition. That little "alternate" route from the rock viewpoint is pretty neat. It seems to me the "original" or CCC-improved trail from the former falls-access point from the east side of the HCRH McCord Cr...

Yup...behind Sahalie. Kinda cool. I know a guidebook that rec's it. Expect to get thoroughly WET. Go for it Gene!
Thanks for the pix and snow updates. Paddling over the Clear Lake stumps while watching your shadow on the bottom of the lake is so so so fabulous. Yum.
cheers, scott

Re: Mitchell Point in Search of Wagon Road

Hey...cheers from New Zealand! Cyclone Lusi is upon me, and the rest of the North Island...so I'm "killing time" as wind rocks my camper back and forth. Splinter, thanks for the confidence!!! Yes, the wagon road which became the early-automobile road is still about 90% intact grade-wise on the slope...
