Re: Finally... The big falls on Whale Creek, without a rope!
Hey you still got to go on a great adventure. At the second falls you were in the correct spot. I backtrack a couple hundred ft and then head straight up til I’m above the falls, then make my way upstream through the notch in the cliff. Be prepared, getting above the third one is a true test, but co...

Re: Finally... The big falls on Whale Creek, without a rope!
Cool, good luck. More specifically, to get above the first falls you come to, go right (compass north). The next two big Falls, stay left (south). The route finding gets more difficult at each falls, but is totally doable. To get above the third fall, Indian Henry, you’ll need to climb up almost to ...

Re: Finally... The big falls on Whale Creek, without a rope!
Me and others have tried, the cliffs are unbroken. The only practical way in on foot is up the creek. I once hiked up the north ridge from the highway all the way up to the forest road above, then came down the south ridge. I was looking for a way in, no go. Huge unbroken cliffs. I only got down the...

Re: A Blistered Pegleg, Dead Animals + Wanderers Peak 5/27 & 6/1
Nice find! I never did find a falls on Hugh, the gorge along the paved road is pretty sweet. I’d like to hike that gorge from top to bottom just to get it checked off the list. All we know is the forest service states there’s a barrier waterfall on Hugh Creek. The drop you found certainly qualifies ...

Re: Fern Canyon & The Boy Scout Tree 29/30-Sep-2015
Nice, I just got back from hiking fern canyon a week ago. We ran into a small herd of elk right at the mouth of the canyon who weren't afraid of humans. We walked by on the trail within 20 or less feet. Two nice 6-pt Bulls in the group

Re: Abiqua falls (where to camp anywhere nearby?)
Rhody lake is not a great place for camping on weekends if you're looking for solitude and safety. I learned that from experience! Sketchier than normal folks tend to congregate their, and I'm generally one to accept all types. The last trip was during the day on a weekend, and I was surprised the s...

Re: Kloster Lakes - June 6, 2015
Nice trip, Paul. Splintercat Creek is about as remote/central as it gets in the Roaring River wilderness. There's no easy way to get to it. Too bad the rhodies are so thick in there.
