Re: Peder's favorite Mt Whittier 8/20

When I did Whittier a month ago, my GPS showed the south summit to be, as I recall, 3 feet higher, if it is to be believed. 3 feet of elevation on a GPS is most definitely NOT to be believed. :) (And I think my GPS points show 1m difference in the other direction.) Someone bring a sextant up there!...

Re: Strange Disappearance on Rainier’s Wonderland Trail

Remember this story of the missing hiker/climber on Mt. St. Helens? http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Remains-found-on-Wash-volcano-are-Japanese-hiker-271781051.html Been in Cougar this 4th of July and saw posters with his photo at rest area. It's taken so long for them to find his body, and seems...

I agree but the people that freak out on the Devils Elbow would not do well up there.

Re: Eliot Moraine Loop (Aug 17)

Even though I am moving up in years I would be in favor of closing that gate all the time and let that used and abused land heal up there. I was there and did the long version on a week day and saw no one from the gate to Tie in rock.

Its a proven method to cut down the foot traffic.

To bad about the weather we already had brief discussion about that I know exactly how it feels. It always amazes me how much bigger everything is up there. It is worthy of the National Park they awarded it.

Nice tr Gene these cool days are great for those elevation hikes. I think I'm the only one around here that has never been there before.

I don't think it would help I saw two guys climbing through the Pearly Gates using cloths line for rope.

Peder's favorite Mt Whittier 8/20

Since May I have been doing a hike a month in the monument and I plan to continue until the snows stop me. So I picked a in and out to the summit of Mt. Whittier for August. Not doing Peder's favorite loop allowed me to travel on the fun part of the ridge twice. :D This is one of the classic hikes i...

Re: Posing Pikas and a old friend MSH summit via Butte Camp

I had been up this route several times in winter and spring but never when the snows were all gone. So when a friend of friend gave me a single permit for Friday I decided to give it a go. I know Karl and I had planed to do this route but it fell through a couple of weeks ago. Sorry Karl I had to g...

Heading up to the Mt. Marge / Bear Camp area this weekend for a couple days. Anyone been up there lately? How are the bugs? Thanks!! I just did Mt. Whittier yesterday from Norway pass and passed by there no bugs on the entire trip. The snow is all melted off but there was a couple of small streams ...
