Re: Wauneka Gap Tree

First, thanks to all who posted their own pictures of the tree. It is difficult for photos to capture how striking the position of the tree was in combination with the entire scene. When coming up from below, or down the ridge from above, the tree was a testament to the power of nature to overcome a...

Re: Vision Quest Pits off Wyeth, Apr 15, 2017

I went over to Washington side for a wrap photo on which I've marked the highlights. ($2.00 x 2 for crossing Bridge of the Gods - I thought that thing was paid for already) Funny. After our hike we also headed to the WA side to get some route photos and I scrounged around to find $1.00 worth of cha...

Wauneka Gap Tree

On the western side of the so-called "Wauneka Gap", scramblers often pause to admire a lone tree standing guard at the edge of the rocky, mossy cliff edge. There are many photos of the tree around. Here is one from a trip report by bobcat (2015): http://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/download/file.php?i...

Here's link to our trip report from a couple of years ago: TransGorge (Hatfield Trail) Backpack: June 18-21, 2015 I put a bunch of map data and elevation profiles in there that you might find useful. Leaving the Eagle Creek Trail and taking the 435 up to the PCT and then to Wahtum adds another steep...

Re: Punch Bowl Falls (1918) - "divil a bit" of a kick in it

You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it! I found the footage of the campers at Eagle Creek and the crowds on the trail itself very interesting. And of course the fisherman at Wahtum Lake was cool as well.

Punch Bowl Falls (1918) - "divil a bit" of a kick in it

9:45 Eagle Creek Trail dress code was enforced

10:30 Divil a Bit

Also, look very carefully at around 1:15 to see trouble makers of 100 years ago scrambling up on stuff.

Re: Ruckel Ridge - Ruckel Creek Loop

I guess the Danger signs at Buck Point are a recent addition. Rainy day pondering of an insignificant mystery... It seems quite common to consider Buck Point to be the spot where the powerlines cross the toe of Ruckel Ridge. The Field Guide refers to Buck Point as that spot. However, there is littl...

Re: Ruckel Ridge - Ruckel Creek Loop

Hey Chip, sorry I missed your other questions before... Wish you had a closeup. I can't make out the text on the right. Any evidence of earlier ascents? Where did you don snowshoes? Was the ridgecrest generally wind scoured, or did you encounter significant depth? I took a look at the photo. The sti...

Re: Ruckel Ridge - Ruckel Creek Loop

Fascinating! Damn, that looks fun. Normally I would agree, I love the RR-RC route. I must say though that had we known (or correctly anticipated) the adverse conditions of the descent route we would have avoided the trip. Very unfavorable\unsafe conditions now. I've been toying with the idea of see...
