Indian Heaven, Bird Mountain Loop, Junction Lake : 10-7-23

Posted on wta.org and also here --> https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report.2023-10-07.4460914197 Snagged a Summer day that snuck into Fall. Temps around 60-70s, blue sky, no smoke, and first half of the trail ablaze with fall color. Prime opportunity to take in a slice of Indian Heav...

Snowcat Ride up To Mt. Hood Summit?

I've climbed a lot of peaks along the west coast (Rainier being the most difficult) but never Hood. I'm also not sharp enough in my mountaineering skills to climb solo, so I look to a guide. Am very fit. I'm asking Timberline Mountain Guides and they seem adamant about taking a snowcat ride part of ...

Re: McNeil Point 2021/11/20

Nice pics. Never thought to do McNeil Point in winter. How easy is the route to follow with the snow? You said you were breaking trail so I assume any tracks from previous hikers weren't present.

Re: Mill Creek Wilderness Loop - October 8-10, 2021

Nice report. Curious for the Milky Way... was it that visible to the naked eye, or is this just a lot exposure from the camera over a length of time? I've been in darker places in Oregon and don't think have seen the night sky quite like that to my eye.

have you noticed the bugs are worse this summer?

I'm not sure, but it seems like it to me vs. previous cooler summers. In both Oregon and Washington. Maybe something to do with the heat and no rain?

I've always wanted to do this as a lightweight single night camp, but have never made the time. Maybe this year.

Re: Mt. St. Helens Loop: Boundary West, Harrys Ridge, South Coldwater Trail

I actually wandered around the camp a bit (no one was setup at the time) to figure out where the water source was, but sorry I didn't notice any. Not to say there isn't. I'd think there has to be, otherwise it's not a good place for a camp. If you were thinking to camp up there, best to call St. Hel...

Re: Mt. St. Helens Loop: Boundary West, Harrys Ridge, South Coldwater Trail

I wasn't paying attention that closely, but on 230A, I am 90% sure that there was "not" any water sources. On 230 on ascent to Coldwater peak, there may be a couple with the melting snow, but that was about it. The only sketchiness may have been on Boundary West and through some of the snow fields o...
