Re: To the Sunshine Trail (Trapper Creek Wilderness) 12-1-21

Yikes. Lucky with that fall. If I remember correctly, with the thickness of that log plus the 3 foot gap from the log to the water that must of been quite the tumble. I was there yesterday also. Went up Big Slide then took a left on Observation and got up to the junction with Sunshine before hitting...

Re: Indian Heaven Labor Day weekend

Blue Lake and Thomas Lake have designated camp sites so unless you get there early I would avoid those. The rest are open. Most of the areas around those lakes are relatively flat so you should be able to find something. It might just be a matter of how far you want to lug water. I was up there on W...

Re: Happy Birthday!

Well, it's not a party balloon but it may have something to do with a party. A unique find yesterday (July 23rd.) a mile or so north of Archer Mt. Six unopened cans still in this short case box. Yuck!! Light beer - I nearly poured it out on the spot, then remembered that beer is good for killing sl...

Re: Bootleg Fire: Gearhart Mountain Wilderness

Playing around with some satellite images you can see what has transpired. Blue Lake is the easiest land mark to spot but I marked some others for reference. Gearhart Mt area on July 18th 2021 . Brown in the 2021 image burned. Still a few (very few) green areas in the 2021 image. july182021-gearhart...

Re: Bootleg Fire: Gearhart Mountain Wilderness

I was down at the Gearhart Mountain Wilderness 10 years to so ago and you couldn't help but notice all the pine beetle killed trees and how impossible it would be to control a fire if it got started in all those dying/dead trees. Probably got way worse in the last 10 years. This fire was a predicabl...

Elk Cove avalanche

IMG_1600.JPG A big thank you to 'smithsummit' for planning my hike for Monday. Always looking for something different to do on Mt Hood beyond hiking the trails and off trails I have hiked dozens of times before I decided to hike over to Elk Cove from Vista Ridge to check out this avalanche. Not oft...

Re: Northwest Real-Time Images

Here is a link to a bunch of cameras located in some of the remotest places you could find in OR/WA/ID. There is a 'beta' site link at the top of the page to take you to other cameras plus a nice video on how all this works and what it costs. http://www.alertwildfire.org/oregon/index.html?camera=Axi...

Re: Barrett Spur -- 07/10/21

Before heading back to the car I took a side trip over to Elk Cove. Damage from the Labor Day storm? The worst of it was very localized. Not too many trees down between Elk Cove and Vista Ridge. That looks more like an avalanche. A big one too. Wouldn't have wanted to have been there when that happ...
