Re: Nesmith Point in the snow(!) First tracks on Nov. 3rd.

Good for you getting that thing done in the wind! I was planning to do Wyeth again yesterday but wussed out when I looked at the wind data from Crown Point. I don't know if Nesmith or Wyeth has the worst wind in this weather pattern, but I didn't want to find out the hard way.

Re: Stop the Beehive Timber Sale! Save the Siouxon Ancient Forest

I checked the satellite images for yesterday, Nov. 13th, and I can see that there's been no work at all on this timber sale. Also, it looks like just a skiff of snow in the area (The TH is at about 2,300') so it appears you could drive to the TH and still hike to Mt. Mitchell. Wholesale lumber price...

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels

A few patches of snow on the Wyeth trail starting at about 1750' and more-or-less continuous at 1,900'.

Lots of trees down, too:

Good trip, Don! I guess I missed the window. Everything's going to freeze over now.
I'm heading out today to do a short hike or two. Looks like an east wind in the gorge and Crown Point's getting 50 mph gusts. Should be interesting.

Re: Nesmith Point in the snow(!) First tracks on Nov. 3rd.

I got an early start, leaving before sunup (take note Chip!) In honor of my birthday? :D Yeah, snow on green leaves in November is weird. I especially like your penultimate pic. Very inviting. Chip, Thanks for the comments. November is an interesting transition month. I remember a couple of Novembe...

Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

Hey Don, you must have some old IH photos you could go duplicate! Nothing very old for IH, back to the mid-nineties though. I'll take a look. Most of my earlier escapades were just trail runs and I didn't take a camera unless it was a camping trip. Of course, now, with the quality and ease of cell ...

I know the precise spot where those pics were taken, too!
In would be neat if you could post a photo of the spot if you have one. Some places just beg for a photo to be taken, don't they?

Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

are those the same four people? Only one of them are the same. You can barely see the top of one of my nephews' head (age 8 then) in the 1983 photo and that's him on the right, age 40 in the 2015 photo. He had so much fun back then, a real hike with his dad and two of his uncles, that he wanted to ...

Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

...I wonder if anybody has had the idea of taking a photo of the same meadow year after year and then after 10 or 20 years they can compare? Some meadows don't change much. Here are photos I took in the Wallowas on the trail to Long Lake in September of 1983 and the same place in August of 2015. ht...

Re: Nesmith Point in the snow(!) First tracks on Nov. 3rd.

Great work DN! I've been curious how the reconstructed trail is. Did they reroute it much? I can imagine sections of it higher in the box canyon slumping pretty badly without the trees to anchor it, though it looks like a lot of them are still standing even if they're dead charcoal now. How was the...
