Re: Mt. Adams High Camp, Sept. 10-12, 2021

What a nice surprise to see your TR this morning! I'm meeting Peder in a few minutes and heading up to High Camp and on to Glacier Lake for some exploring. I've not been above High Camp before so nice to see your pics of the terrain. Thanks for the TR.

Fall colors on the PCT near Mt. Adams

This was a hike we decided to do escaping the forecast hot weather but it didn't turn out that way. Still, the scenery was great, albeit somewhat obscured by wildfire smoke. It was already about 65 when we arrived at the Williams Mine TH on the PCT, a mile or so up a spur road near MP 43 on road 23,...

Webfoot,

Can you drive the road to the TH without having the Weyerhaeuser permit?

Re: Lava Dike below Elk Mountain

Hi pinecone,

Thanks for documenting that dike and the great TR and photos. I noticed it too on a recent hike along the ridge and was planning to check it out later. I still may go back but you've answered some questions I had.

Re: Mt Defiance/Starvation Ridge -- 09/09/21

I missed a turn on the way to Wahtum lake and found myself near the summit so went for it. It was not gated in the past, but may be now. It's very rocky for the final bit (4 to 6" dia. rocks, some even bigger) but with a good SUV or at least a high clearance vehicle and 4WD, no problem. I've seen ve...

Clearly, I should have asked if Don had a map before I set out. Oh well, sometimes it's more fun to just go exploring.
Chip, agreed: more fun to just go exploring.

Re: Girl Scout Basin

I wonder if all that sliding is related to the big slide off Hamilton mountain that dammed the Columbia at Cascade Locks? Will that happen again? Jerry, It's all the same basic geology. There are many areas in the gorge that have slid/are sliding. I suspect the major mechanism for major slide movem...

Re: Girl Scout Basin

Chip, Great TR and I’m glad you’ve discovered the area. There are many old roads in there and lots to explore. The entire area between Wind Mt. and Dog Mt. is one huge, slow moving landslide. It still moves, though more slowly than in past years. There are places where the trees are bent and even to...

Re: Cloud Cap to Gnarl Ridge (August 23)

Tom, Excellent photos, and thanks for the TR! Amazing how the posts erode over time. I was exploring atop Mummy Mt. in Nevada a few years ago marveling how the long dead and fallen bristlecone pines were eroding into artistic shapes. (30 miles WNW of Las Vegas, 11,530' elev.) I've read that it can t...
