Re: Jumbo Peak - 2019-10-12

John, Thanks for the TR and info on access. I'll have to give the new route a try. The "wedge shaped mountain", ≈5,620' el. is on listsofjohn.com as Sofibida Peak. I climbed it on Sept. 8th 2015 after doing Jumbo Peak. I don't know how it got that name and haven't found any other reference for it. H...

Re: GPS Beacons?

I have a Spot and carried it for a while but it is useless in canyons and near cliffs/deep forest cover. I'm off-trail a lot and even a couple hundred feet off is way too much if I really need to be rescued from the places I tend to go hiking/exploring. Spot was off by a mile or more at times and us...

Re: Gorton Creek 08/22/2019

I did this route twice post fire and there is only about a half mile or less of completely obliterated trail. The switchbacks off the ridge are the worse due to small trees down over the trail and some brush. Here is a track from a June '18 trip: http://www.fototime.com/AA09D84CA65CA15/xlarge.jpg Th...

Wow! What a great hike and fantastic photos. Thanks so much for letting us live this hike vicariously. I haven't been to the Wallowas since '15 and this TR makes me put it on my ever lengthening "short" list.

Re: Black Mountain - attempt and final success: 101718 and 080319

Seems like I haven't seen a DN TR in a while. Have wondered what you've been up to. If it took you guys 11:44, I have to believe the vast majority of us would have a hard time doing that in a day (or maybe even two). Nice game trails. If only we could train them to build trails where we want! But i...

...Ben & Nat, I hope the old geezer wasn't too hard on you!
Ha! They were very forgiving of this "old geezer" allowing me to at least stay in sight of them on the up-climb. On the return, on the trail, I led most of the way and they seemed fine with that - but then, I had the car keys!

Black Mountain - attempt and final success: 101718 and 080319

Black Mountain is located 11 miles due north of Mt. St. Helens in the extreme NW corner of Skamania County. Shielded by both distance and geography, it escaped the devastation of the 1980 eruption. The area around it remains a spectacular and untouched old growth paradise. The blast stopped two mile...

Re: Skeeters Indian Heaven . . .

I can't speak to the area you are asking about but in general, IMO this has been a bad year. I'm out every other day on average and I'm getting eaten alive - even in the eastern gorge when I don't hose myself down with bug spray. They are even getting me through my shirt and pants! I'm not used to i...
