Re: steep trails

Just did Cripple Creek to Serene Lake and while it may not statistically be the steepest...geesh! Thankfully someone has logged out the trail that the Forest Service seems to have abandoned, but the trail tread has quite a side slope. Combined with the elevation gain it made for a heckuva hike. Pole...

Re: Mirror Lake trailhead parking is "closed"

The Mirror Lake section of ODOT's safety corridor work on Hwy 26 is being designed this spring/summer. Tom Kloster and I are representing Trailkeepers of Oregon at a meeting with ODOT's project design team this morning to advocate for improving the historic Mirror Lake Trailhead parking AND adding o...

Re: The Snow Level Thread, 2010

I hiked/ran a loop up over the top of Green Point Mt. yesterday and found significant snow for a stretch of about 2 1/4 miles. It went from a few patches to several feet deep in only a couple hundred feet horizontal distance. I think there's enough up there to last three or four more weeks. Here's ...

Re: Salmon Mountain ridge, Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness

Alex, [whoops, I was not paying attention, got it into my head you followed the ridge up from the Bonanza TH, 'scuse me]. Very nicely done report and no doubt a challenging climb - I have seen this trail on the older maps and wondered about that route. Say, it would be nice to have GPS tracks of yo...

Re: Recon: Hambone, N.Plaza, Arrah Wanna - August 23, 2009

Alex, If you open the PH maps via the page top icon, navigate to Bighorn Creek, then zoom to the 3 from the biggest scale, the map displayed shows the Hambone Trail. Alignment difffers from the USFS map -- which to me looks like a poor approximation-- but seems to be similar to or to be the same as...

Salmon Mountain ridge, Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness

The Salmon Mountain Ridge Trail, aka-the north ridge of the South Fork Salmon River, last appears multiple maps up until the 1939 USFS map (I do not have 1940-'46). It is a straight shot from the Salmon River road, north of the bridge across the S. Fork Salmon River, up the ridge to the former Salmo...

More on Hambone Springs Trail in Salmon-Huckleberry Wldnss

Inspired by Pablo's post here is more on the Hambone Springs Trail: I decided to first try and locate the Hambone Springs Trail junction with the Salmon River trail #742 on the NORTH side of the Salmon River. I made it to the big cedar flat where I thought the trail might be and BOOM, a 30-foot alde...

Re: June 5, 2010 Sound of Two Rivers Trail (near Roaring River)

Looks like a nice trip. Sounds like a very pretty area. Did the pointer find the wrens? I walked by the nest, which is hidden under a fern. The mother took off across trail behind me and just as she wanted (I assume) the pointer took off after her. Don figured out immediately that she had abandoned...

Re: June 5, 2010 Sound of Two Rivers Trail (near Roaring River)

Nice report, Alex - and welcome to Portland Hikers! So, I take it that the Trail Advocates have done a bit of restoration on this trail? Is it in decent enough condition that you're recommend it to hikers in general, or more of an explorer's trail..? I believe that Pablo recently covered this in a ...

June 5, 2010 Sound of Two Rivers Trail (near Roaring River)

Trail Advocate volunteer Don Presley and I hiked the recently-restored Sound of Two Rivers trail up the north ridge of the Roaring River from the confluence with the Clackamas River. The trail is mapped as far back as at least 1927. The highlights include rare old-growth Douglas fir forests, strange...
